Highest partnerships for a wicket in World T20

Big partnerships serve to exhaust and demoralize the fielding teams in addition to piling up runs on the scoreboard. In the shortest format of the game, such a partnership can take the game away from the opposition. In 20 overs if two batsmen get on a roll, it can demoralize the opposition to no end. The format is generally played on flat batting surfaces where bowlers have difficulty in keeping the runs down. Here’s a look the highest partnerships for a wicket in World T20. 10. Steve Finn, Jade Dernbach – 20 v India: The English pair added 20 in a huge defeat for their team. On 23rd September 2012 in Colombo, India hammered 170/4 and in reply England could manage only 80 in 14.4 overs. The last pair played their part in delaying the inevitable. Harbhajan Singh took 4/12 that left the English batsmen clueless on a turning track. Finn made an unbeaten 8 off 10 while his partner was the last man out on 12 off 7. On 11th May 2010 in Saint Lucia, the home side batted first and was reduced to 85/9 before these two took the total past hundred. A target of 106 proved easy as the Aussies overhauled it in 16.2 overs. Miller made an unbeaten 10 off 13 while his partner was the last man out on 9 off 16. 9. Gulbadeen Naib & Shapoor Zadran – 44 v England: Afghanistan batsman Gulbadin Naib plays a shot. Batting first England hammered 196/5 and in reply, the Afghans could manage only 80 in 17.2 overs. It was Naib who made 44 off 32 while Zadran failed to open his account in the 3 balls he faces. 8. Mike Hussey, Mitchell Johnson – 53* v Pakistan: (Photo Source: Getty Images) The unbeaten 8th wicket partnership between the Aussie pair took their team home in the semi-final of the 2010 edition played on 14th May in Saint Lucia. Batting first Pakistan put up a huge total- 191/6 and in reply Hussey played a stunning innings to take Australia through to the final. He finished the match on 60 off 24 while Johnson made 5 off 3. From being in troubled waters on 65/6, the pair with their 7th wicket partnership took the Aussies to 141 which proved enough as the Asian side managed only 114 in 18.4 overs. Hussey made an unbeaten 47 off 29 while Smith scored 27 off 18. 6. Cameron White, Mike Hussey – 101* v Sri Lanka: Australian players Michael Hussey and Cameron White. This was another rescue act involving Mr. Cricke Mike Hussey. From 67/5, the team made a strong recovery as White finished on an unbeaten 85 off 49 while Hussey’s 39 not out came from 26 balls. The Lankans in reply could manage only 87 from 16.2 overs and absolutely surrendered the game. 5. Shoaib Malik, Misbah-ul-Haq – 119* v Australia: Pakistan’s Misbah-ul-Haq (C) celebrates with his teammates. The total was never going to be enough on one of the most batting friendly surfaces in the world. Pakistan skipper Shoaib Malik made 52 off 38 and Misbah’s 66 came off 42 balls. Batting first the Windies made 179/5 which proved enough. Hales made 68 off 51 while Morgan made an unbeaten 71 off 36 as England finished on 164/4 in their share of overs. 3. Alex Hales, Eoin Morgan – 152 v Sri Lanka: Alex Hales (L) and Eoin Morgan of England. Hales’ made an unbeaten 116 off 64 while Morgan’s 57 came off 38 in a run-chase of 190. England overhauled the target in 19.2 overs and kept itself alive in the marquee event. Sri Lankan though went on to lift the cup by defeating India in the final. 2. Mahela Jayawardena, Kumar Sangakkara – 166 v West Indies: Sri Lanka’s Mahela Jayawardena and Kumar Sangakkara run between wickets. Sangakkara made 68 off 49 and this duo batted together for 166 runs during their second wicket partnership. The home side managed only 138/8 in a disappointingly lacklustre batting performance. 1. Chris Gayle, Devon Smith – 145 v South Africa: West Indies opening batsman Chris Gayle plays a shot. Gayle made a memorable 117 off 57 balls including 10 maximums while Smith’s subdued 35 off 34 included 3 fours. Windies put up 205/6 however, it didn’t prove enough as a Herschelle Gibbs special sealed the match for the home side by 8 wickets.
