Deepika Padukone, for all the brilliant work that she’s been doing, has also invited a lot of criticism in recent times. The Jamia Militia and the JNU episode clearly had an adverse impact on her film ‘Chhapaak’. Now, she has grabbed the headlines once again – this time with her social media post. A few days ago, Deepika shared her first look from the film ’83’. The sports-drama is Kabir Khan’s ambitious project with Ranveer Singh in the lead role as Kapil Dev.
Works have been going on for about a year now and the film is slated to release on 10 April 2020. The movie will be showcasing Team India’s journey through the 1983 World Cup glory. It also features Jiiva, Ammy Virk, Saqib Saleem, Tahir Raj Bhasin, Boman Irani and others in pivotal roles. Alongside her husband, Deepika will be playing a small role in this movie. She will be portraying former captain Kapil Dev’s wife Romi Dev. The first look poster, where the actress is seen sharing a pleasant and adorable moment with Ranveer, was praised by many. But that caption that she put along with that picture wasn’t like by all.
People find Deepika Padukone’s comment regressive
In her post, Deepika Padukone wrote that this film is an ode to every woman who put her husband’s dream before their own. “To play a small part in a film that captures one of the most iconic moments in sporting history has been an absolute honour! 83 for me is an ode to every woman who puts her husband’s dream before her own… #ThisIs83,” the caption reads.

However, the fans have found this to be very annoying. They lashed out at Deepika for this backward chatter and some even termed this to be a publicity stunt. One of the users replied, “Romanticising the idea of a woman behind a man is common practice in Indian cinema, please let’s not glorify it for the sake of promotion”. Many were of the opinion that all these things only look good in films and not in real life and some also wrote that Deepika might make a contradictory statement in one of her other films.
Here is how Twitterati reacted:
Just to promote the film such a backward chatter. How annoying.

I am a big fan of Kapil Dev. I am just 3 years old when I saw the celebrations. But I will make sure that none of my family or friends watch this movie. NO MORE SENTIMENTAL FOOLING OR BLACKMAILING. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH. NOT A SINGLE RUPEE FROM ME SHALL GO TO YOU.

Do not adopt any inferior publicity stunt for this film. The film is based on a great cricketer. This is the cricketer who got Dawood Ibrahim out of the dressing room Which you film industry people can never do.

No. Have you read about Sudha Murthy? Have you come across millions of housewives who have chosen their husbands and children's success ahead of their own? Promotion ke liye kuch bhi??

I don't quite agree with every woman putting her dream before the one's her husband has. It's an ancient school of thought. Please don't squash the dreams of millions of girls who dream to be like you one day. Stop making them feel that at the end of the day they won't matter.

This glorification of stories where a woman “puts her husband’s dream before her own” is exhausting. I am tired of having to see women give up their own dreams and aspirations for their husbands, and I am even more tired of the cinema industry acting as if it’s a good thing.

We don't need women to put their dreams on the back burner. Agree the movie is set in the '80s but her sacrifice is not her achievement. Romanticising the idea of a woman behind a man is common practice in Indian cinema, please let's not glorify it for the sake of promotion.

Real progressive!

The very mention, putting husband's dream before own… says, not to see his dream as own. #JustSaying. Filmon mein accha lagta hai, not in real life, if she don't see his dream as her.
