'How much rest he needs?' - Twitter infuriated after Virat Kohli is rested for Zimbabwe tour
Kohli will now play his next match in the Asia Cup.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the squad for the three-match ODI series against Zimbabwe starting on August 18. The biggest news is former skipper Virat Kohli is missing from the 15-men squad alongside KL Rahul. Kohli was rested from the recently concluded ODI series and the ongoing T20I series against West Indies as well. His fans took Twitter to react to their favourite player’s exclusion from the Zimbabwe tour.
Kohli is struggling for consistency in international cricket and various reports suggested that he will be part of the Zimbabwe tour to regain his form and momentum. He scored just 33 runs in two ODI matches and 12 in two T20Is against England. Still, he finds himself as the highest-ranked Indian batter in ICC ODI Batter’s chart in the number five position. Also, no Indian batter has scored more runs in ODI cricket since the conclusion of the 2019 World Cup than him.
The 33-year-old star was not part of India’s T20I series against South Africa and Ireland last month but featured in two ODIs and the same number of T20I matches against England. Fans were furious at the BCCI after the squad was announced for the West Indies tour and now again are bashing the selection committee for resting Virat Kohli. Various reports had suggested that the former Indian skipper would play this tour but contrary to those, he has been rested yet again.
The veteran opening batter Shikhar Dhawan is named as captain after he guided India to a 3-0 series win against West Indies. He became the first Indian captain to whitewash West Indies in the ODI format. The Player of the Series award winner in the ODI series against West Indies, Shubman Gill, has kept his place in the squad. The right-arm pacer Deepak Chahar and spinner Washington Sundar return to the international scenes for the first time since the conclusion of the Indian Premier League 2022.
