'How's that not out' - Shane Warne after an old video of him bowling to Sachin Tendulkar resurfaces on Twitter
The clip is from the first Test between India and Australia in Chennai in 1998.
Back in the lates 90s, the battle between India and Australia had a contest which the entire world looked forward to. India’s top batsman Sachin Tendulkar vs Australia’s superstar bowler Shane Warne. Needless to say, Sachin smashed Warne to all parts of the ground through that time. Warne was the best spinner in the world, but maybe Sachin just found it easy to play him.
On Monday an old clip of this rivalry surfaced on Twitter. The video contained an appeal for LBW from Warne while bowling to Sachin in a Test match. After being given not out, Sachin went on to score 155 runs in that match.
The tweet read, “OUT OR NOT OUT…. Sachin Tendulkar vs Shane Warne. 1st test 1998, Sachin made a mind-blowing 155*. But there was a huuuge appeal for LBW from Warnie, early on. Umpire Venkat, known for random decisions, you never knew what he’d do…..would love hawkeye on this one….”
Warne claims Sachin Tendulkar was out during his 155-run knock in Chennai
After watching the video, Shane Warne joined in the banter and asked how does everyone feel that it was not out. “Seriously? Come on @robelinda2 !!!!!! How’s that not out”, Warne tweeted.
After reviewing the video properly, our team concluded that the ball could have been pitching outside the leg stump, which would make Sachin not-out. However, it was a very close call and surely if it had happened today, Warne would have taken a DRS.
The clip is from the first Test between India and Australia in Chennai in 1998. The match had huge buildup for this contest as Shane Warne was the no.1 spinner in the world at the time and Sachin Tendulkar was having a dream run with the bat. In the first innings, Warne had got Sachin out for just four runs. In fact, Australia had a 71-run lead going into the second innings.
When Sachin came out to bat in the second innings, India was looking to build a lead and put forward a match-winning target in front of the Aussies. Apart from the early scare, Sachin’s batting was completely flawless. The Mumbai batsman smashed 155 runs off just 191 balls on a pitch was constantly offering spin. This innings one of the best which was played for Sachin in his career. India went on to win the match by 179 runs.
