Veteran Indian opener Shikhar Dhawan recently tested positive for COVID-19 along with six other members of the Indian side ahead of the home series against West Indies. On Thursday (February 3), the southpaw thanked his fans for pouring in their support and love. Among the players, Shreyas Iyer, Ruturaj Gaikwad and Navdeep Saini have also tested contracted the virus and are under isolation. Meanwhile, Mayank Agarwal has been added to the squad for the ODI series.

India is slated in to play a three-match ODI series followed by a three-match T20I series against the West Indies starting from this Sunday(February 6). All eyes will be on Rohit Sharma as this series will be his first assignment as the full-time ODI skipper for the nation. He is likely to take up the role in Test cricket, although there hasn’t been confirmation yet as his fitness concerns still remains a problem for the Indian side.

Shikhar Dhawan’s message for his fans

Meanwhile, Dhawan, who is one of the popular and active cricketers on social media, took to Twitter to show the love and support he has had from his fans after testing positive for the virus. Dhawan was in terrific form in the recent tour to South Africa where he finished as India’s highest run-scorer, smashing two half-centuries in three games.

He has managed to hold on to his position despite a lot of questions over his age and his long-time reliability to make it through to the ODI World Cup in 2023. “Thank you everyone for your wishes. I’m doing fine and humbled by all the love that’s come my way,” Dhawan tweeted alongside shared a picture of himself.

Meanwhile, Dhawan wasn’t retained by any franchise ahead of the IPL 2022 mega auction despite having a fantastic season with the bat for Delhi Capitals in 2021. He scored 587 runs in 16 IPL games and finished as the fourth-highest run-getter in the season. He was second among the highest run-scorers for IPL 2020 and has been very consistent throughout the last two years in any format he has played. Hence, it will be interesting to see which team bags the veteran’s services.
