India didn’t make the greatest of starts to their Australia sojourn. On Friday, November 27, Virat Kohli and Co lost the opening ODI at the Sydney Cricket Ground by a massive margin of 66 runs. It means that their last two matches in the three-match series are must-win affairs. Apart from their shoddy performance on the field, their poor over-rate also came in the limelight.

As per the ICC guidelines, a team has to complete their quota of 50 overs in three hours and 30 mins- 210 minutes to be more precise. However, Virat Kohli’s men took a staggering 246 minutes to bowl 300 legitimate deliveries. The same might lead to Team India, copping a hefty fine. Going by the ODI league rules, a team is fined one point for every delayed over.

However, the mishap won’t affect their chances of qualifying for the 2023 World Cup. As per the rules, the hosts, automatically, qualify for the tournament, meaning that India would be playing in the mega event. In the meantime, a Twitter user highlighted India’s poor over-rate.

However, former Indian cricketer Wasim Jaffer gently hit back at the user. He uploaded a picture with a popular dialogue, showing that he doesn’t care about the rules. The veteran captioned the photo and wrote, “Being hosts we’ve already qualified for 2023 WC so in short.”

Here’s Jaffer’s tweet:

India crumbling in Sydney

After being put in to field first, the Indian bowlers capitulated as the hosts plundered 374 in their 50 overs. Aaron Finch and Steve Smith’s centuries led the charge for the hosts. David Warner and Glenn Maxwell also chipped in with useful scores to propel their team to the humongous score at the SCG. For India, Mohammed Shami picked up three wickets with the other bowlers being dismal.

While chasing 375, Shikhar Dhawan’s 74 and Hardik Pandya’s 90 kept the Men in Blue in the hunt. Mayank Agarwal, captain Kohli, Ravindra Jadeja and Navdeep Saini scored in the 20s, but their efforts went in vain. The second ODI is set to be played on Sunday in Sydney. Apart from thew ODIs, India will also play three T20Is and four Test matches.
