I am looking for next opportunity in my career: Shubman Gill

Shubman Gill is one of the few young prospects of India who has the potential to develop himself as a regular starter for the national side. The 20-year-old, who has showcased his ability in the Under-19 circuit and also in the Indian Premier League (IPL) broke into the senior team in January 2019.

However, it was not a start which Gill would have hoped for. The youngster could only manage to score 9 and 7 in the fourth and fifth ODI against New Zealand. Despite making an unpleasant start to his international career, the top-order batsman is not worried about his future. Gill is optimistic that he will seize the opportunities that will come ahead of him in future.

“I think my career is going at the right pace. In all the tournaments, I have been trying to step up my game and trying to work hard and get those runs. I’ve said this earlier. I can’t really expect a fairytale start everywhere I go. I was really disappointed when I didn’t get the runs. I was obviously hoping that I would get the runs and that’d be a really good start for my career. But I’m looking for the next opportunity,” said Gill at a promotional event according to The Quint.

Shubman Gill was also successful in earning his maiden Test call-up for the home series against South Africa after KL Rahul was dropped from the side. Even though the right-hander failed to get a chance in the playing XI, Gill cherishes the experience of sharing the dressing room with the senior side. He also identified India as the best team in the world based on current form.

A really good learning curve for me, says Shubman Gill

“It was a really good experience for me. Learning from the best team in the world. The form the Indian team is playing with right now… We haven’t lost even a single match. Even in West Indies, and here in India against South Africa. So, it was a really good learning curve for me,” he said.

Shubman Gill currently entered the record books by captaining Punjab in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. He surpassed current Indian captain Virat Kohli after the 20-year-old became the youngest-known captain to lead a side in the finals of Deodhar Trophy.

Indian skipper, Virat Kohli, had captained North Zone in the final back in the 2009-10 season at the age of 21. Gill has amassed 1535 runs in 15 matches in his first-class career at an impressive average of 69.8. He has also smashed four centuries and nine half-centuries in first-class cricket.
