'I am not the one' - Twitter slams wrong Ollie Robinson for racist and sexist tweets
Twitter users have been tagging wrong Ollie Robinson who plays for Kent as a wicketkeeper and is only a 22-year-old.
England cricketer Ollie Robinson is all over the news since making his debut for his country in the ongoing first Test against New Zealand at Lord’s on Wednesday (June 2). The day started on a good note for the tall pacer as he nipped out Tom Latham and Ross Taylor on an otherwise dull outing for England. However, by the time the play ended, Robinson was trending on social media for his racist and sexist tweet during his teenage years.
His old tweets surfaced on Twitter and the cricketer had to come up with an apology for the same. Moreover, ECB has also launched an investigation into the matter and Ollie Robinson might even face punishment given the seriousness of the issue in modern times. It goes without saying that the cricketer is also facing a lot of heat from the fans across the globe.
Now there is another twist to the story here. Ollie Robinson’s namesake has been unfortunately facing all the flak for the 28-year-old’s tweet despite not doing anything. In a case of mistaken identity on social media, Twitterati has been tagging wrong Ollie Robinson and slamming him for his deeds.
22-year-old Ollie Robinson from Kent faces heat; releases statement
Interestingly, the other Ollie Robinson is also a cricketer and also shares the same birth date (December 1)with the one who made his debut for England on Wednesday. He plays for Kent as a wicketkeeper and was born in 1998. Having received a lot of hate and abuse, the 22-year-old youngster had to issue a statement on his official Twitter handle to clarify that he is not the one who made those tweets.
“Unfortunately, today people have been getting me confused with the other Ollie Robinson – we both share the same name, birthday and play the same game. However, I am not the one that has been getting referenced today in the media with regards to historic social media posts,” he wrote in his post to clarify.
The real Ollie Robinson, who has got himself into trouble due to his old racist and sexist tweets, plays for Sussex in County Cricket and was born in 1993. Even Yorkshire is in trouble now for not taking the required action when needed as the cricketer has been playing for them since 2013.
