Former Indian pacer, Zaheer Khan said that he would consider taking up the bowling coach role, once it comes his way. With BCCI not renewing Bharath Arun’s contract, the position is open for a new coach, and Zaheer is the one who is expected to fit in. “Right now I am focused on what I have it on my plate, like playing the next season of the IPL. I am also spending a lot of energy on my business venture – a fitness chain. Those things are keeping me busy. But I am open to different roles,” added Zaheer who was in Chennai to promote the Tamil Nadu Premier League.

However, Zaheer said that he is currently focussing on the next season of IPL, and is open to looking forward to anything as it comes. “Right now I am focused on what I have it on my plate, like playing the next season of the IPL. I am also spending a lot of energy on my business venture – a fitness chain. Those things are keeping me busy. But ,” added Zaheer who was in Chennai to promote the Tamil Nadu Premier League.

The 37-year old said that the experience of the coach is what counts despite being a batsman or bowler. “It doesn’t matter whether the coach is a former bowler or batsman. All that counts is experience,” he added.

Speaking about Mohammad Shami, he said that Shami has all the qualities to lead the India’s pace attack. “It’s good to see him getting his confidence back. He was away for 8-9 months due to injury and it took a little longer for recovery. And I have always endorsed the idea of playing more matches. It’s good for the bowlers, as they need to find a rhythm,” he felt.

Speaking about James Anderson crediting Zaheer for unknowingly helping him explore the art of reverse swing, Zaheer said, “I really appreciate his comment, though I have never personally interacted with him. Anderson has been a great bowler for England and has been someone who had the ability to swing the ball and proved his capabilities across the globe.”

Zaheer said T20 is not only batsmen’s game, rather bowlers are the game changers in the shortest format of the game. “There are a lot of tactical inputs required on the field from a bowler. I believe bowlers are the game changers in T20. “Someone like Mitchell Starc has proved it time and again. Something that never goes wrong in death overs is a good yorker,” he concluded.
