Indian cricketer S Sreesanth now has his lifetime ban, which was imposed by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), lifted. Thanks to the Supreme Court, which despite finding him guilty of spot-fixing charges, have discharged him of the lifelong ban from cricket. The 36-year-old called it as a ‘lifeline’ and his wife believes that Sreesanth is all set for bouncing back.

The spot-fixing incident dates back to 2013 when the BCCI disciplinary committee had castigated multiple cricketers including the player in question. The right-arm pacer was penalized based on an internal investigation administered by Ravi Sawan, who was the head of the BCCI’s anti-corruption unit at that time. Rajasthan Royals representative Sreesanth along with his two of his teammates in the franchise – Ankeet Chavan and Ajit Chandila – sustained lifetime bans for their role in the spot-fixing scandal.

According to the Delhi Police, the charges held against the Indian cricketer was with regard to the match against Kings XI Punjab, that played on May 9 of that year. Sreesanth and Co. had allegedly promised the bookmakers to falter the game as directed, during the 2013 IPL. However, almost six years hence, the Supreme Court finally revoked the life ban on former Indian cricketer, on Friday, March 15. A Court of Justices Ashok Bhushan and K.M. Joseph said the life ban was ‘too harsh’.

The bench further clarified that the injunction shall not alter the criminal proceedings that are pending against the ex-cricketer. The standard of disciplinary proceedings was higher than that of criminal proceedings, the court said. The former cricketer, however, remained active in the entertainment world and participated in the 12th season of the television show Bigg Boss and another show named ‘Khatron Ke Khiladi’. Sreesanth also took to politics as he contested for Kerala Assembly polls from Thiruvananthapuram on a BJP ticket and accumulated enough votes to seize the second position.

Sreesanth’s wife is positive of her husband’s comeback on the field

Amidst all the chaos in the former Indian cricketer’s life, he decided to tie the knot with his girlfriend. On 12 December 2013, Sreesanth married his girlfriend Bhuvneshwari Kumari, of Jaipur’s Shekhawat family, at Guruvayur Sri Krishna temple in Kerala. She has remained a constant source of support throughout the turmoil in Sreesanth’s life.

“Thank you so much for praying and I am very happy with the Supreme Court decision. He has got justice. The top court has set aside the ban and I hope BCCI does the same. Sreesanth is already practicing. Two days ago, he was hit by a ball on his head and had to get some stitches but he is recovering. I am sure he will make a comeback,” Bhuvneshwari was quoted as saying in News 18.
