'I changed my stance, I changed my technique but nothing went my way' - Andre Russell on failures in IPL 2020

It was quite evident in IPL 2020 that Caribbean star Andre Russell struggled to find his form with the bat. Russell is deemed as one of the most valuable assets for the Kolkata Knight Riders franchise and has pulled the team out of tough spots on many occasions. He was the most valuable player of the year in IPL 2019 and averaged an impressive 56 that season. However, in IPL 2020, he managed just 117 runs from his bat in 10 games.

Russell also struggled with injury while he was plying his trade in IPL 2020 and had to miss some game due to that. Looking back to his campaign of IPL 2020, Russell says that despite changing his techniques and stance, he couldn’t make big for KKR. Nothing seemed to go in the power hitter’s way while he was out with bat on the field.

“I changed my stance, I changed my technique, I changed my trigger movement, all these things I changed just to score runs in IPL, and nothing was going my way. The pressure was real. I’m a tough player, and I didn’t know I could actually feel what happened during this year’s IPL. And I just wanted everything to go quickly behind me,” said Russell while speaking to Jamaica-based TV network SportsMax.

Russell also added that he was coming back from one bio-bubble from Caribbean Premier League. Another bio bubble just took a toll on his mental self. He added that living in continuous bio bubbles felt like a prison, and he immediately took some time off in Dubai after getting over with IPL 2020.

“I get out of the bubble. I go to Dubai, have a good time, drink, party, loosen myself. I feel alive. When you feel like you’re coming out of prison, it’s like I’ve never been to prison, but this lockdown actually felt like, ‘oh my god, I can’t do whatever I want to do.”
