Ahead of the highly-anticipated 2021 Indian Premier League (IPL), Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) were dealt with a massive blow as their skipper and ace batsman Eoin Morgan succumbed to an injury while fielding in the first ODI of the three-match series against India at the MCA Stadium in Pune.
After splitting the webbing between his thumb and index finger, Morgan had to get the stitches and was thus forced to sit out in the next two ODIs against India. Jos Buttler led the England side in the absence of Morgan but just like the Test and T20Is, the visitors had to face defeat, this time by 2-1.
There are speculations that Eoin might have to sit out in the first few games of IPL 2021 due to his hand injury. However, in a virtual press conference on Wednesday, the skipper confirmed that he is progressing well and feels a lot better than he did a week ago. Morgan further revealed that his stitches will be removed on Thursday after which he will be focusing on his batting and fielding.
“I feel a lot better than I did probably a week ago. The plan moving forward is to remove the stitches tomorrow. Then progress my batting in the coming days and over the week, and then fielding at the back end of that. Given the time frame that I have available to me, it is looking very good,” said Morgan

There was a lot of confusion regarding the batting order of the Knights in IPL 2020. Morgan also batted at various positions in the middle order in the previous season and ended up with 418 runs under his belt from 14 games.
When asked about KKR’s batting line-up this time around, the 34-year-old asserted, “So we are all due to get together quite soon, at the end of the week. There we will discuss all of our plans and thoughts and actually talk about our strengths as a squad and as a team.”
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is all set to host the 14th edition of the IPL in India across six venues namely Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, Delhi, Mumbai, and Kolkata, scheduled to start from April 9. The opening match will take place between Mumbai Indians (MI) and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in Chennai.
