After a remarkable and stunning performance in the Test series victory against the visiting Indian team and then a dismal run in the limited overs series, South Africa would be engaging in another home Test series against Australia. Both teams would be facing each other in a four-match Test series, with the 1st Test scheduled from March 1 to March 5 in Durban and the final Test match to be played between March 30 to April 3.
During the preparation of the upcoming important series, the host side has been stricken with the most surprising and disappointing news. Current South African leading fast bowler Morne Morkel has officially announced that upcoming Test series against Australia would mark his last appearances in international cricket.
It is the right time to start a new chapter of life
Morkel has so far represented his national team in 83 Tests and 117 ODIs in which he has scalped 294 and 188 wickets respectively. After some constant injuries to Dale Steyn, Morne has been the epitome of the Proteas bowling attack, especially in Test matches. However, he feels that this is the right time to take this huge decision and begin a new chapter in life ahead with his young family and his loving wife.
“It was an extremely tough decision but I feel the time is right to start a new chapter. I have a young family and a foreign wife, and the current demanding international schedule has put a lot of strain on us. I have to put them first and this decision will only benefit us going forward,” said Morkel on his retirement decision as quoted by Daily Mail.
I enjoyed every single minute with the team
The Protean fast bowler also revealed that he would surely be remembering all the happenings which he experienced and enjoyed in national colours. He also thanked all his teammates and Cricket South Africa, for rendering their much-needed support throughout his cricketing career. The paceman believes that it is truly an honour to get the opportunity of representing the Proteas team in all the three formats of the game.
“I have loved every minute that I have played in the Proteas jersey, and I am incredibly grateful to my team-mates, Cricket South Africa, and my family and friends for the support over the years,” further added the fast bowler.
