'I got quite angry about it but nothing was ever done about it'- Murphy Su'a recalls being subjected to racial abuse in the 90s
Murphy Su'a represented New Zealand in 13 Tests and 12 ODIs between 1992 and 1995.
Former New Zealand bowler Murphy Su’a has come forward and made a huge revelation stating that a senior player of the 1990s had made a racist comment at him. Racism is one of the aspects for which there is zero tolerance in sports, and society for that matter, and the last couple of years have witnessed many players coming forward and admitting that they had been targets of such inhuman incidents.
Regarding the incident, Murphy Su’a said that he was very angry back then when he was subjected to racial abuse. Furthermore, he said that no action was taken against the person who was responsible for it nor did he issue any apology for it either. At the same time, Su’a also said that he was held partially responsible for that incident.
He’s never apologized for it: Murphy Su’a
“It really upset me. I got quite angry about it but nothing was ever done about it. They said it was just the heat of the moment. But for me, it wasn’t the heat of the moment. No matter what you’re doing, you can’t talk to people and categorize them in the way that person did,” Su’a said while speaking to NZ Herald.
“He’s never apologized for it and probably doesn’t think he did anything wrong,” he added. “They blamed me for my attitude. But it wasn’t my attitude. When someone calls you a derogatory comment about where you come from, why wouldn’t you get upset and defend yourself?” he further added.
Murphy Su’a, who is of Samoan descent, has represented the Kiwis in 13 Tests and 12 One Day Internationals from 1992 to 1995. Even though he was selected for the 1992 World Cup that was co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand, he did not get a single game. The Martin Crowe-led side enjoyed an excellent tournament before being stunned by the eventual winners Pakistan at Eden Park, Auckland in the first semifinal.
