'I have no issues playing all games currently' - Rohit Sharma throws light on workload management

Shedding some light on his take on workload management, Indian captain Rohit Sharma commented he does not feel the need to take a break at this time and has no reservations in playing all of India’s games in the near future. Sharma stated that understanding one’s workload is something that is done day by day by trying to gauge if they need a break. He also feels a player needs to think about who takes their place in case they want a break and what sort of potential the incoming player possesses.

It can be noted that the senior Indian batter has recently come off an injury-related layoff that saw the 34-year-old missing India’s all-important tour to South Africa. He has since been named India’s next Test captain after also being announced as the limited-overs captain previously.

“At the moment, I have no issues and looking forward to playing all the games,”  Sharma said at the virtual press conference ahead of the Sri Lanka series.

“The workload always depends on what happens thereafter and you take day by day and understand what you do and if a break is needed, you take a break and someone else comes in. You see how the other guy can fill in, what sort of potential he has. At the moment, it seems to be okay,” he added.

Keep scoring runs and the opportunity will arise: Rohit Sharma

Commenting further when asked about the advice he would want to give those players who are trying to find a spot in the team, Sharma said he would want them to be consistently scoring runs and at some point, they will get their chances. Citing certain players such as Hanuma Vihari, Shreyas Iyer, and Shubman Gill as examples, the opening batter advised those in waiting to stay patient and continue to be focused on scoring runs.

“All I can tell them is keep scoring runs and the opportunity will arise as it has for (Hanuma) Vihari and Shreyas Iyer, Shubhman Gill, and all those guys, who are part of the test team now. A lot of these guys, I know, you got to keep scoring runs, you got to keep your head down and keep doing your job, that is what I can tell them at the moment and that is all we can expect them also to do,” added Sharma.

The Indian captain also went on to endorse the Ranji Trophy as a perfect platform for the players to showcase their abilities by putting together critical performances while hoping to see the positive results continuing. 

“All these guys who have got an opportunity to play Ranji Trophy, I am very happy that they at least got to play the Ranji Trophy, which is the most critical from their perspective. I hope we see more and more performances in the next two games as well,” he concluded.
