Former New Zealand head coach Mike Hesson was one of the favourites to take up India’s head coach role. But he lost the race to Ravi Shastri who was reappointed at the helm by the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) led by Kapil Dev. Hesson came second in the race followed by Tom Moody who resigned as the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) head coach recently.

However, ever since then, it is being reported that Mike Hesson has applied for Pakistan’s head coach position. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) didn’t renew Mickey Arthur’s contract following a dismal World Cup and has invited applications from the interested candidates for the role. While Misbah-ul-Haq is reportedly the favourite to take over the top job, Hesson’s name was also doing the rounds for quite a while.

The 44-year-old though has cleared the speculations of him applying for the coaching role and has wished all the luck to the one who will be selected for the position. Moreover, he also went on to state that the person to take up the job will be extremely talented and will have exciting times ahead.

Hesson’s tweet

“Just to clarify as plenty of speculation about …….. I have not applied for the Pakistan Head Coach Role with @TheRealPCB. Whoever gets the role certainly has plenty of talent to work with and would be an exciting proposition for whoever gets the job! #pakistan,” Hesson wrote in his tweet.

As far as Mike Hesson’s record as coach is concerned, it is brilliant. New Zealand qualified for the final of the World Cup 2015 for the first time under him and also did extremely well across the formats during his tenure. Surprisingly, he resigned from the position only a year before the 2019 World Cup and was appointed at the helm for the Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) in the IPL.

But he left that job as well and applied for India’s head coach despite Shastri being the favourite to continue. He missed closely though and will be interested to apply again when Shastri’s term ends in 2021.
