While Joe Root and his good name have been doing the rounds in recent times, the 26-year old is almost certain to be named the skipper of the England cricket team following the resignation of Alastair Cook. The latter had resigned after a poor tour of the subcontinent, something that saw him under tremendous pressure. However, while many wanted Cook to stay including his teammates with the England side as well.
However, despite all that, the 31-year old England opener took the executive decision to step down as the skipper of the Test side with one eye on his batting. As many have seen contention for the skipper’s role in the side open up rather significantly, the fact of the matter is that Joe Root is perhaps the favorite to take over the role. In spite of being just 26, Root has been one of the most important players in the side in the grand scheme of things given the manner in which he has consistently performed with the bat as well.
While the likes of Stuart Broad and Ben Stokes were also interviewed for the role of England captain, the fact was that Root was still viewed as the golden boy for the establishment.
“Being a dad, you don’t really know what to do until you have to go with it,” he told the BBC before Cook’s resignation. “I imagine being captain would be very similar. Until you’re in that position I don’t think you know. I’ve got quite a lot experience in Test cricket now, but it’s one of these things you have to learn on the job.”
