It was highly anticipated that the Indian leggie Yuzvendra Chahal would play the first ODI match against West Indies at MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai considering the slowness of the pitch. However, he didn’t play. Chahal’s partner-in-crime Kuldeep Yadav was picked for the match but he remained wicketless and leaked as many as 45 runs in his 10-over spell.
Digging a tad deep about the match, India got the much-needed backing from Rishabh Pant and Shreyas Iyer who piled up runs in pressure situation after KL Rahul, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma were dismissed early on in the game. The duo struck a century-plus stand for the fourth wicket as Pant and Iyer chipped in with 71 and 70 respectively to help India post 287 for eight in their allotted quota of 50 overs.
However, the bowlers hardly showed any teeth in their attack as they failed to defend the target. The bowlers were tonked to all parts of the park by West Indies’ opener Shai Hope and top-order batsman Shimron Hetmyer as they smashed centuries each to help the team ace the run-chase with 13 balls to spare as West Indies beat India by 8 wickets to take the first lead in the three-match ODI series.
