I was numb after the WTC Final ended: Ravi Ashwin
Ashwin was the best bowler for India in the second innings picking both the wickets to fall.
New Zealand defeated India by eight wickets last week to become the inaugural World Test Champions. Though the margin of victory for the Kiwis suggests it was an easy win, India were very much in the game while defending a modest 139 on the sixth day. While the pacers were doing their job, the off-spinner Ravi Ashwin was also giving his best from the other end keeping a check on the Kiwi batsmen.
Rather he was the one who provided breakthroughs dismissing Tom Latham and Devon Conway both to leave New Zealand at 44/2. However, after the early nervousness, Kane Williamson and Ross Taylor both got set to take the team over the line. Interestingly, Ashwin had also got the better of the Kiwi captain only for the lbw decision to be overturned on DRS.
Ashwin was the best bowler for India in the innings conceding only 17 runs in 10 overs while picking two wickets and bowling five maidens. Understandably, he was disappointed and has now revealed he was actually numb after India lost the match. He also stated that the team was confident even on the final day.
“I was numb after the match ended, wondering what had happened. Even on the last day, I believed we were in the match. The lbw of Kane Williamson, ball tracker showed the ball was missing. It was unexpected. Match got over and it was upsetting,” he said while talking on his Youtube channel.
Ashwin hoping for India to win an ICC tournament
Ravi Ashwin also understood the disappointment of the Indian fans back home who have been in lockdown more or less since last year and were looking forward to the Final of the WTC. However, the off-spinner asserted that the team gave its best shot while hoping that they win an ICC tournament soon.
“Obviously fans are disappointed and rightly so. A billion Indians were looking forward to some good news after the lockdown and such stuff. But it did not happen. Fingers crossed. Just hoping we can win some other ICC tournament.
“The rub of the green didn’t go our way. England is not an easy place to travel and take wickets or score runs instantly. We had a month’s break after the IPL and didn’t play any games. Not giving excuses, we gave out best shot but it didn’t happen, and it was disappointing,” the 34-year-old signed off.
