Pakistan has always produced some great bowlers over the years. Danish Kaneria was one of them. It should be pointed out that he is the fourth-highest wicket-taker in Tests after Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis, and Imran Khan. However, he doesn’t get as equal recognition as them. Simply, because of his involvement in the spot-fixing scandal in the United Kingdom.
Due to this, the leg-spinner was banned for life and has never involved with Pakistan cricket since. In a recent interview, the spinner requested the Pakistan Cricket Board to lift his ban, so that he can contribute to the country’s cricket. He pointed out he would want to shape the careers of the young players in Pakistan. He said that number of spinners is reducing in Pakistan.
Former players can really help out and shape up some budding talent: Danish Kaneria
“The spinners are reducing in number in Pakistan. That is why I want to clear my name and help the spinners in the country. I would like to work with them to shape their career and I would like to give Pakistan quality leg-spinners once again,” Danish Kaneria said as quoted by the New Indian Express.
The current Test squad has Yasir Shah, who has a good record but hasn’t done well in overseas conditions. Shadab Khan is another player who has done well for the team in the ODI and T20I format.
The 39-year-old Kaneria also stated that PCB needs to look at the experienced cricketers for help. He said that involving ex-cricketers with international experience will be good for Pakistan cricket. He also pointed out that Saqlain Mushtaq’s appointment as Head of International Player Development is a great move by the PCB.
“PCB should really think about it. I would like to request PCB to get more former cricketers involved in their setup, at least look to get those players involved who have played 30-40 Test matches for Pakistan. These former players can really help out in the academies and they can shape up some budding talent,” Kaneria added. “Give chances to cricketers. Recently PCB appointed Saqlain Mushtaq as Head of International Player Development. It is a very good sign. Saqlain is a really experienced guy and he will help all the players,” Kaneria stated.
Kaneria played 61 Tests between 2001 and 2007 and was their main spinner in the longest format during that time. The leg-spinner picked up 261 wickets and has helped his country to many great wins in home and overseas conditions. He also played 18 ODIs and took 15 wickets in them.
