MS Dhoni has come under severe criticism recently for his poor performances with the bat in the 50-overs format. He is clearly struggling to score quickly and his waning hitting abilities are a worrying cause of concern for Team India with the World Cup approaching fast. However, the former South Africa cricketer AB de Villiers laughed off when he was asked about the same and went on to say that he would’ve picked the veteran in his team even if he turns 80 years old.
There have been calls for Dhoni to retire after he has failed to finish the games like before and even in the Asia Cup, he wasn’t at his best. He was also booed at the Lord’s earlier this year for not trying to upping the ante when the required run-rate was increasing with every dot ball. Despite all the shortcomings, Dhoni has got captain and coach’s backing as they understand his importance in the line-up.
He is a fantastic player
AB de Villiers is in India currently for an event and undoubtedly, he was asked about the state of Indian cricket under Virat Kohli’s leadership and MS Dhoni’s place in the ODI team. While he praised and gave full marks to his RCB teammate for his captaincy, he laughed off loudly while answering about Dhoni.
“You guys are funny. No, I would play MS Dhoni in my team every day of every year. He can be 80 (years old), I ensure he will play for my team. He is fantastic I mean look at his record. You want to drop a guy like that? You can go ahead by all means. I wouldn’t,” he was quoted as saying by The Quint.
Dhoni will now play in the five-match ODI series against the Windies and will hope to answer his critics in a grandiose way and also shut all the debate regarding his place in the ODI team.
