ICC Champions Trophy was started by the International Cricket Council (ICC) in 1998. Back then, it was called as ICC KnockOut Tournament. The first edition of ICC Champions Trophy was held in Bangladesh. There has been a total of 7 editions of the tournament and India has won it twice (once shared with Sri Lanka).

India was the host country in 2006. Over the span of two decades, we have witnessed many exceptional performances by India in this tournament. We also have seen many humiliating losses. Excitement, anger, joy, anguish, it had all. This is the only ICC tournament where Pakistan has an upper-hand over India. But India is holding the pole position in the list of Champions Trophy winners, alongside Australia.

From 1st of June later this year, the 8th edition of the elite tournament will be starting. 20 years since its inauguration. Let us dig up on nostalgia and revisit India&#8217;s journey at the CT so far.

#1 ICC KnockOut Tournament, 1998

The first ever Champions Trophy played in Bangladesh was called the ICC KnockOut Tournament. The 8 participating teams played the quarter-finals straight away and India faced the mighty Australians in the first encounter. Indian team was captained by Mohammad Azharuddin.

Quarter-final against Australia- The match was played at Bangabandhu National Stadium, Dhaka. Steve Waugh decided to bowl first. Indian team scored a mammoth 307. 25-year old Sachin Tendulkar batted brilliantly, scoring 141 runs in 128 balls. Coming out to bat, Australia were looking dangerous. Mark Waugh and Ricky Ponting set up a good partnership. But after their dismissal, no one could take the innings through, as the Aussies were all out for 263. Tendulkar again was the star with the ball, picking up 4 wickets.

Semi-final against West Indies- Azharuddin won the toss and decided to bat first. Sourav Ganguly played a brilliant knock of 83 from 116 balls as India managed to get only 242 runs. West Indies was steady with the bat as both Shivnarine Chanderpaul and captain Brain Lara struck half-centuries. Tendulkar again was impressive with the ball, but West Indies chased down the target with 3 overs to spare. Hence, India&#8217;s journey ended in the semis.

#2 ICC KnockOut Tournament, 2000

Kenya hosted the 2nd edition of the tournament. India won against Kenya to qualify for QF. Again in the QF, India had to face Aussies.

Quarter-Final against Australia- Waugh decided to field first. The Indian team led by Sourav Ganguly posted a total of 265. Yuvraj Singh played a match-winning knock of 84 from 80 balls. Aussies lost 3 wickets within 100, but Ponting and Bevan built a solid partnership. But no one could take the charge after their dismissal as India won by 15 runs.

Semi-final against South Africa- Ganguly won the toss and decided to bat first. He played a captain&#8217;s knock of 141 runs from 142 balls as India scored 295 runs. Zaheer, Kumble ad Tendulkar were spot-on with the ball. Only Mark Boucher was looking dangerous, but he was undone by Ganguly. South Africa were all out for 200.

Final against New Zealand- Stephen Fleming won the toss and chose to bowl. Ganguly played another top knock of 117 runs but the middle-order collapsed. India managed to get only 264 after 141-run opening stand. Coming out to bat, the Kiwis were 132-5. But Chris Cairns struck a wonderful 102 as New Zealand won a cracker with 2 balls to spare.

#3 ICC Champions Trophy, 2002

A pool system was introduced for the first time. India was in Pool-2 with England and Zimbabwe. Sri Lanka was the host.

Match 1 against Zimbabwe- Opting to bat first, India scored a massive 288 runs. Kaif was the best batsman for India. He scored 111 runs in 112 balls. Andy Flower played a superb knock of 145 runs, but Zimbabwe fell short of the target by 9 runs.

Match 2 against England- England batted first and scored 269 runs, owing to Ian Blackwell&#8217;s 82. But Virender Sehwag and Sourav Ganguly put up a first wicket partnership of 192 runs. Sehwag scored 126 while Ganguly made 117. India chased the target with over 10 overs to spare.

Semi-final against South Africa- Ganguly won the toss and opted to bat. He scored 58, while Yuvraj Singh scored a quick-fire 62. India posted a total of 261. Herschelle Gibbs and Jacques Kallis batted brilliantly for Proteas. But after their departure, South Africa lost the momentum. They fell short by 10 runs.

Final against Sri Lanka- Both the finals were washed out as India and Sri Lanka shared the trophy. In the first occasion, Sri Lanka scored 244 runs while India batted just 2 overs. On the second day, Lankans scored 222 while India was 38-1 at the ninth over.

England was the host nation. India was placed in Group C alongside Pakistan and Kenya.

Match 1 against Kenya- India was handed over the bat by Kenya. Ganguly again played a captain&#8217;s knock of 90 as India managed to score 290 runs. It was too big a task for Kenya, as they lost the match by 98 runs. Harbhajan Singh picked up 3 wickets

Match 2 against Pakistan- Inzamam-ul-Haq decided to field first. India&#8217;s batting collapsed as they were bowled out for 200 runs. Dravid scored 67 while Agarkar scored 47. Pakistan lost 3 wickets early, but skipper along with Yousuf Youhana formed a solid partnership. After Inzamam&#8217;s dismissal, Afridi gave a good support to Youhana, who took Pakistan to the semis.

#5 ICC Champions Trophy, 2006

India hosted the tournament. They were placed in Group B alongside Australia, West Indies and England.

Match 1 against England- Dravid won the toss and elected to field. Ramesh Powar and Munaf Patel bowled brilliantly as England were bowled out for just 125. Tendulkar and Yuvraj batted well to take India home with over 20 overs remaining.

Match 2 against West Indies- Lara decided to field first. India scored only 223 as no one except skipper Dravid or Dhoni could impress. Sarwan and Chanderpaul batted well for the windies. The match went down to the wire as Samuels took Windies through.

Match 3 against Australia- Dravid decided to bat first. Sehwag and Dravid batted well and India scored 249 runs. 250 was easy for the Aussies as they reached the target with over 4 overs remaining, owing to top knocks from Ponting and Damien Martyn. With just 1 win out of 3, India were eliminated.

#6 ICC Champions Trophy, 2009

South Africa was the host nation. India was placed in Group A alongside Australia, Pakistan and West Indies.

1st match against Pakistan- India were facing off with rivals Pakistan for 2nd time in CT. Younis Khan won the toss and opted to bat. Pakistan scored a massive 302, owing to century from Shoaib Malik. Gambhir and Dravid fought for India, but 303 was way too much for them as they were all out for 248.

2nd match against Australia- Opting to bat first, Aussie batters destroyed Indian bowling as they were 234/4 at the 43rd over, But rain played spoilsport and match was washed out.

3rd match against West Indies- Dhoni opted to field first. Praveen Kumar and Ashish Nehra bowled superbly as West Indies were bowled out for 129. India chased down the target with around 18 over remaining. But is was of no use as Pakistan and Australia qualified for semis from Group A.

#7 ICC Champions Trophy, 2013

England and Wales hosted the tournament. India was in Group B alongside Pakistan, South Africa and West Indies.

Match 1 against South Africa- AB de Villiers opted to field. Shikhar Dhawan scored a brilliant century as India posted a mammoth 331. Skipper de Villiers and Ryan McLaren fought hard, but they fell short of the target by 26 runs.

Match 2 against West Indies- Dhoni opted to field. Jadeja took a 5-wicket haul as Windies managed just 233 runs. 234 was too easy for India. Shikhar Dhawan scored his second consecutive century.

Match 3 against Pakistan- For the 3rd time, the arch-rivals were meeting in CT. Dhoni opted to field first. Only Asad Shafiq was impressive for Pakistan, as they were bowled out for 165. Bhuvaneshwar Kumar was the best bowler for India. It was rain-affected match and by D/L method, India needed 102 runs in 22 overs. They chased down the target quite comfortably.

Semi-final against Sri Lanka- Dhoni opted to field first again. Ishant Sharma and Ravichandran Ashwin took 3 wickets each, as Sri Lanka were bowled out for 181. Shikhar Dhawan and Virat Kohli scored half-centuries as India chased down the target with 15 overs to spare.

Final against England- Again a rain-affected match as the number of overs were reduced to 20. Cook decided to bowl first. India were 66-5 at one stage, but Jadeja&#8217;s 33 from 25 helped them reach 129. 130 was not a big total, but Indian bowlers were right on the money. Jadeja and Ashwin hunted in pairs, while Dhoni used his bowlers to perfection. Dhoni&#8217;s decision to hand Ishant Sharma the ball in the 18th over turned the match in India&#8217;s favor. Jadeja and Ashwin bowled 2 brilliant last overs as England fell short by just 5 runs. Thereby, India won their 2nd ICC Champions Trophy, this time being the lone owner.

Match 2 against West Indies- Dhoni opted to field. Jadeja took a 5-wicket haul as Windies managed just 233 runs. 234 was too easy for India. Shikhar Dhawan scored his second consecutive century.
Match 3 against Pakistan- For the 3rd time, the arch-rivals were meeting in CT. Dhoni opted to field first. Only Asad Shafiq was impressive for Pakistan, as they were bowled out for 165. Bhuvaneshwar Kumar was the best bowler for India. It was rain-affected match and by D/L method, India needed 102 runs in 22 overs. They chased down the target quite comfortably.
Semi-final against Sri Lanka- Dhoni opted to field first again. Ishant Sharma and Ravichandran Ashwin took 3 wickets each, as Sri Lanka were bowled out for 181. Shikhar Dhawan and Virat Kohli scored half-centuries as India chased down the target with 15 overs to spare.
Final against England- Again a rain-affected match as the number of overs were reduced to 20. Cook decided to bowl first. India were 66-5 at one stage, but Jadeja’s 33 from 25 helped them reach 129. 130 was not a big total, but Indian bowlers were right on the money. Jadeja and Ashwin hunted in pairs, while Dhoni used his bowlers to perfection. Dhoni’s decision to hand Ishant Sharma the ball in the 18th over turned the match in India’s favor. Jadeja and Ashwin bowled 2 brilliant last overs as England fell short by just 5 runs. Thereby, India won their 2nd ICC Champions Trophy, this time being the lone owner.

ICC Champions Trophy was started by the International Cricket Council (ICC) in 1998. Back then, it was called as ICC KnockOut Tournament. The first edition of ICC Champions Trophy was held in Bangladesh. There has been a total of 7 editions of the tournament and India has won it twice (once shared with Sri Lanka).
India was the host country in 2006. Over the span of two decades, we have witnessed many exceptional performances by India in this tournament. We also have seen many humiliating losses. Excitement, anger, joy, anguish, it had all. This is the only ICC tournament where Pakistan has an upper-hand over India. But India is holding the pole position in the list of Champions Trophy winners, alongside Australia.
From 1st of June later this year, the 8th edition of the elite tournament will be starting. 20 years since its inauguration. Let us dig up on nostalgia and revisit India&#8217;s journey at the CT so far.
<h3>#1 ICC KnockOut Tournament, 1998</h3>

The first ever Champions Trophy played in Bangladesh was called the ICC KnockOut Tournament. The 8 participating teams played the quarter-finals straight away and India faced the mighty Australians in the first encounter. Indian team was captained by Mohammad Azharuddin.
Quarter-final against Australia- The match was played at Bangabandhu National Stadium, Dhaka. Steve Waugh decided to bowl first. Indian team scored a mammoth 307. 25-year old Sachin Tendulkar batted brilliantly, scoring 141 runs in 128 balls. Coming out to bat, Australia were looking dangerous. Mark Waugh and Ricky Ponting set up a good partnership. But after their dismissal, no one could take the innings through, as the Aussies were all out for 263. Tendulkar again was the star with the ball, picking up 4 wickets.
Semi-final against West Indies- Azharuddin won the toss and decided to bat first. Sourav Ganguly played a brilliant knock of 83 from 116 balls as India managed to get only 242 runs. West Indies was steady with the bat as both Shivnarine Chanderpaul and captain Brain Lara struck half-centuries. Tendulkar again was impressive with the ball, but West Indies chased down the target with 3 overs to spare. Hence, India&#8217;s journey ended in the semis.

<h3>#2 ICC KnockOut Tournament, 2000</h3>

Kenya hosted the 2nd edition of the tournament. India won against Kenya to qualify for QF. Again in the QF, India had to face Aussies.
Quarter-Final against Australia- Waugh decided to field first. The Indian team led by Sourav Ganguly posted a total of 265. Yuvraj Singh played a match-winning knock of 84 from 80 balls. Aussies lost 3 wickets within 100, but Ponting and Bevan built a solid partnership. But no one could take the charge after their dismissal as India won by 15 runs.
Semi-final against South Africa- Ganguly won the toss and decided to bat first. He played a captain&#8217;s knock of 141 runs from 142 balls as India scored 295 runs. Zaheer, Kumble ad Tendulkar were spot-on with the ball. Only Mark Boucher was looking dangerous, but he was undone by Ganguly. South Africa were all out for 200.
Final against New Zealand- Stephen Fleming won the toss and chose to bowl. Ganguly played another top knock of 117 runs but the middle-order collapsed. India managed to get only 264 after 141-run opening stand. Coming out to bat, the Kiwis were 132-5. But Chris Cairns struck a wonderful 102 as New Zealand won a cracker with 2 balls to spare.

<h3>#3 ICC Champions Trophy, 2002</h3>

A pool system was introduced for the first time. India was in Pool-2 with England and Zimbabwe. Sri Lanka was the host.
Match 1 against Zimbabwe- Opting to bat first, India scored a massive 288 runs. Kaif was the best batsman for India. He scored 111 runs in 112 balls. Andy Flower played a superb knock of 145 runs, but Zimbabwe fell short of the target by 9 runs.
Match 2 against England- England batted first and scored 269 runs, owing to Ian Blackwell&#8217;s 82. But Virender Sehwag and Sourav Ganguly put up a first wicket partnership of 192 runs. Sehwag scored 126 while Ganguly made 117. India chased the target with over 10 overs to spare.
Semi-final against South Africa- Ganguly won the toss and opted to bat. He scored 58, while Yuvraj Singh scored a quick-fire 62. India posted a total of 261. Herschelle Gibbs and Jacques Kallis batted brilliantly for Proteas. But after their departure, South Africa lost the momentum. They fell short by 10 runs.
Final against Sri Lanka- Both the finals were washed out as India and Sri Lanka shared the trophy. In the first occasion, Sri Lanka scored 244 runs while India batted just 2 overs. On the second day, Lankans scored 222 while India was 38-1 at the ninth over.

<h3>#4 ICC Champions Trophy, 2004</h3>

England was the host nation. India was placed in Group C alongside Pakistan and Kenya.
Match 1 against Kenya- India was handed over the bat by Kenya. Ganguly again played a captain&#8217;s knock of 90 as India managed to score 290 runs. It was too big a task for Kenya, as they lost the match by 98 runs. Harbhajan Singh picked up 3 wickets
Match 2 against Pakistan- Inzamam-ul-Haq decided to field first. India&#8217;s batting collapsed as they were bowled out for 200 runs. Dravid scored 67 while Agarkar scored 47. Pakistan lost 3 wickets early, but skipper along with Yousuf Youhana formed a solid partnership. After Inzamam&#8217;s dismissal, Afridi gave a good support to Youhana, who took Pakistan to the semis.

India hosted the tournament. They were placed in Group B alongside Australia, West Indies and England.
Match 1 against England- Dravid won the toss and elected to field. Ramesh Powar and Munaf Patel bowled brilliantly as England were bowled out for just 125. Tendulkar and Yuvraj batted well to take India home with over 20 overs remaining.
Match 2 against West Indies- Lara decided to field first. India scored only 223 as no one except skipper Dravid or Dhoni could impress. Sarwan and Chanderpaul batted well for the windies. The match went down to the wire as Samuels took Windies through.
Match 3 against Australia- Dravid decided to bat first. Sehwag and Dravid batted well and India scored 249 runs. 250 was easy for the Aussies as they reached the target with over 4 overs remaining, owing to top knocks from Ponting and Damien Martyn. With just 1 win out of 3, India were eliminated.

South Africa was the host nation. India was placed in Group A alongside Australia, Pakistan and West Indies.
1st match against Pakistan- India were facing off with rivals Pakistan for 2nd time in CT. Younis Khan won the toss and opted to bat. Pakistan scored a massive 302, owing to century from Shoaib Malik. Gambhir and Dravid fought for India, but 303 was way too much for them as they were all out for 248.
2nd match against Australia- Opting to bat first, Aussie batters destroyed Indian bowling as they were 234/4 at the 43rd over, But rain played spoilsport and match was washed out.
3rd match against West Indies- Dhoni opted to field first. Praveen Kumar and Ashish Nehra bowled superbly as West Indies were bowled out for 129. India chased down the target with around 18 over remaining. But is was of no use as Pakistan and Australia qualified for semis from Group A.
