The ICC World XI is all set to lock horns with Pakistan in a 3 match T20 series starting from today. The day is of utmost significance in Pakistan cricket history as it will mark the end of the 8-year long international ban on the country. The matches will be played at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore and will be a sheer delight for the cricket thirsty fans.
The main story:
The International Cricket Council (ICC) has joined hands with the PCB in their efforts to bring back international cricket to Pakistan. The ICC changed the cover photos of their Twitter and Facebook handles ahead of the mega event. The city of Pakistan has posters and banners of the World XI and its players up in every corner of the roads as they welcome the visitors in style.
The ICC put up a cover photo of a similar road in Pakistan which had a huge banner of the star studded World XI. The banner consisted of pictures of all the visiting heavyweights namely, Faf du Plessis, Hashim Amla, Grant Elliott, Imran Tahir, Darren Sammy, Thisara Pereira, Paul Collingwood, Tamim Iqbal, George Baily, Morne Morkel, Ben Cutting, David Miller, Samuel Badree, Tim Payne and head coach Andy Flower.
Pakistan has been facing a ban from international cricket since the horrific attack on the Sri Lankan team bus in 2009. It was a black day for the world of cricket when the visiting Sri Lankans were attacked by terrorists near the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore. Several players got injured including the likes of Thilam Samaraweera and Kumar Sangakkara while 6 Pakistani policemen were killed. No Test playing nation has toured Pakistan ever since barring a visit from Zimbabwe in the year of 2015.
However, with Najam Sethi becoming the new PCB Chairman, fortunes have turned for the country. After the World XI tour, Sri Lanka and West Indies are also set to visit Pakistan for brief encounters. Here is how the Twitterati reacted on ICC’s change of cover:
