The International Cricket Council (ICC) has extended the cut-off date from March 30 for the World Cup Super League in order to accommodate the series between Bangladesh and Ireland. Bangladesh was scheduled to travel to Ireland in 2020, but the tour was postponed due to COVID-19. However, a 45-day extension from the cut off date will make sure that the series gets completed in time.

Ireland has a tight-packed schedule ahead for 2022 and they had no places in to fill a home series against Bangladesh. Ireland will play a two-match T20I series against India at home in June and it will be followed by a three-match ODI and T20I series against New Zealand in the month of July. They will also play South Africa for a two-match T20I series in August and hence, a home series against Bangladesh will only be possible in May.

”Yes, the cut-off date of ICC Super League is extended. BCB and our Irish counterparts requested ICC to extend it, so that we can complete our Ireland tour and we are expecting to do that by May,” Bangladesh Cricket Board chief executive, Nizamuddin confirmed while speaking to Cricbuzz.

”We have been playing matches at a stretch and so could not find out time for the series against Ireland. Now, as the time is extended, we can complete the tour in May,” he added.

Bangladesh leads the ICC World Super League Table

Meanwhile, Bangladesh leads the ICC World Super League table with 100 points to their name while England is at second with five points lesser. Notably, Ireland is at the fifth position in the table with 68 points from 18 games while the Netherlands is at the bottom of the table at the moment.

It has to be noted that the top eight teams from the World Super League points table will qualify automatically for the World Cup 2023. At the moment, things aren’t looking good for big houses like Pakistan, South Africa, and New Zealand who are out of the top eight race.
