Afghanistan Under-19s brought an end to their campaign in the U19 CWC 2020 with yet another victory over the South Africa Under-19s. The Afghans, who ended at No.4 in the previous edition, had to settle with No.7 place this time. Shafiqullah Ghafari once again struck with the ball as he claimed his 3rd 4-wicket haul of the tournament. The home team did recover from 91/7 to be bowled out on 154. Afghanistan completed the chase with five wickets and 58 balls to spare as Ibrahim Zadran scored an unbeaten 73.
All the statistical highlights from Afghanistan’s yet another win over South Africa in this U19 CWC:
3 – Shafiqullah Ghafari is now the first player from Afghanistan to claim three 4-wicket hauls in U19 CWC. Aftab Alam had two 4-fers across the 12 matches he played in 2010 and 2012 editions of the tournament. Ghafari is overall the 7th player to take three 4-wicket hauls in U19 CWC which includes five players with three 4-fers in an edition of U19 CWC.
5 – Ibrahim Zadran has five fifties in U19 CWCs including three in this edition. He is the first player from Afghanistan with five fifties in the history of U19 CWC. Tariq Stanikzai and Hashmatullah Shahidi had four half-centuries apiece in the U19 CWC. Overall, Ibrahim has six fifties in Youth ODIs while no other Afghanistan player has scored more than four.
10 – Shafiqullah Ghafari picked up 10 wickets across the two matches against South Africa in this tournament. These are the most number of wickets a player has picked against a single opponent in the history of CWC.
Nepal’s Lakpa Lama and Afghanistan’s Aftab Alam took 8 wickets apiece across two editions of the CWC against Papua New Guinea. Lloyd Pope also claimed 8 wickets against England when he recorded figures of 8/65 in the quarter-final of the 2018 edition. Only Lakpa Lama against PNG and Ghafari vs SA have had multiple 4-fers against an opponent in U19 CWC.
16 – The 16 wickets by Shafiqullah Ghafari are the joint 2nd most by a leg-spinner in an edition of U19 CWC. Mushtaq Ahmed claimed 19 wickets across nine matches he played during the 1988 edition. Ramnaresh Sarwan and Mansoor Amjad also took 16 wickets apiece in the 1998 and 2004 editions respectively.
426 – Ibrahim Zadran aggregated 426 runs across 10 matches in the U19 CWCs; the most number of runs for Afghanistan in the history of U19 CWC. He went past Hashmatullah Shahidi’s tally of 425 runs in U19 CWC with his unbeaten fifty against South Africa. Ibrahim has 594 runs across 17 innings in Youth ODI cricket while no other Afghanistan player has 500 runs in this format.
