ICC U19 World Cup 2020, Day 4 Round Up

The ICC U19 World Cup in South Africa was a witness to a couple of matches in Group B on Monday, January 20. The contest between Nigeria and Australia at the Country Club B Field in Kimberley was a pretty one-sided affair. It took only 38.1 overs for Mackenzie Harvey’s Aussies to register a 10-wicket victory. Nigeria went through a nightmare after winning the toss and electing to bat first.

They fell prey to the guile of leg-spinner Tanveer Sangha, who picked up a five-wicket haul. The tweaker also gave away 14 runs in his 10 overs, including four maidens. The youngster got decent support from Bradley Simpson, who ended with three wickets. Nigeria could only manage 61 runs. Sam Fanning and Jake Fraser-McGurk helped Australia chase the target down with 42.2 overs left.

Nyeem Young blows away England

In the other match on Group B, West Indies comprehensively beat England by 71 runs (DLS Method) at the Diamond Oval in Kimberley. After being put in to bat first, the Caribbean team notched 267 in their 50 overs. Their openers, Kimani Melius and Leonardo Julien got starts, but couldn’t convert. However, Kevin Anderson steadied the ship and stayed unbeaten until the very end of the innings.

But it was Nyeem Young’s 41-ball 66 that propelled the West Indies’ score. The right-hander smacked five fours and four sixes and helped his side amass 104 runs in the last 10 overs.. England made a stead start, but lost wickets at regular intervals. Ben Charlesworth, Jordan Cox, Tom Clark and Jack Haynes scored in the 20s and 30s. To their dismay, none could make their starts count.

Young stepped with the ball as well after his marvellous batting show. The medium pace bowler picked up five wickets and broke the backbone of the English batting. He got the required support from left-arm spinner Ashmead Nedd. From 120/2, England slumped to 151/8 in a space of 9.1 overs. In the end in the 44th over, the heavens opened up in a severe manner and play didn’t resume.
