With the men’s cricketing extravaganza of Champions Trophy, 2017 coming to an end, it is now time for the Women’s World Cup to take center stage. The one-month long tournament, to be held in the United Kingdom (UK) begins on the 24th of June, 2017, with the finals to be played on 23rd July, 2017. The top 8 ranked teams namely, Australia, England, New Zealand, West Indies, India, South Africa, Sri Lanka and Pakistan (in order of their ICC rankings), will be taking part in the ultimate championship.

It is a sad reality that Women’s cricket has rarely received the much-deserved attention and appreciation from cricket lovers, as compared to the men’s version of the game. However, in the past decade, situations have improved for the better and the International Cricketing Council (ICC) has taken a keen interest to make Women’s cricket more popular among the masses as well as to improve the monetary realms associated with the tournaments. The recent announcement to award the winner of the World Cup with $6,60,000 is definitely a step in the right direction.

Total prize money

Keeping in tune with the “ICC’s strategy of enhancing the stature of women’s cricket, the ICC had earlier in May announced that the total prize money for the tournament would be $2 million.” This is a staggering 10-fold increase than the total prize money offered in the 2013 edition of the world championship.

Distribution of prize money

The prize money of $2 millions is to be divided between every participating team. The winner would take home an amount of $6,60,000, while the runners-up would be awarded exactly half the amount, $3,30,000. “The losing semifinalists will be getting $165,000 each. Teams exiting at the group stage will get $30,000 each while each win in the group stage will earn a side $20,000.”

The teams will get a chance to brush up their skills ahead of the much-awaited trophy conquest, in the practice matches. The practice matches schedule kicks off with the host team, England going head to head with Sri Lanka in Chesterfield, along with India taking on New Zealand in Derbyshire.
