ICC World Cup 2019: Aaron Finch feels a hungry David Warner is fired up to unfold mayhem
"I can imagine there's something inside you that burns really strongly," Finch said.
Almost 13 months ago, David Warner’s world turned upside down after his involvement in the ball-tampering scandal in South Africa. The southpaw hosted a press conference after being slapped with a one-year suspension and broke down in tears, repenting the error in judgement that happened on the cursed day at the Newlands, probably one of the darkest days in the history of Australian cricket.
Bruised, mentally scarred, Warner didn’t allow the hardships to get him on his knees. Rather, he weathered the storm and got back on his feet and his performances are a testament to his grit and determination. In the ongoing edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL), he is the Orange Cap holder.
In 12 matches, Warner scored 692 runs at an average of 69.20 and a strike-rate of 143.86. The New South Wales-born didn’t show mercy on any bowler whatsoever and demolished whoever stumbled onto his path. The hard work has also earned him a place in the Australian World Cup squad.
We know how destructive he can be
Aaron Finch, the Australian skipper for the mega event, has enough confidence in Warner and reckons that the fire in his belly can spur David to restamp his authority in international cricket. Finch also signified the importance of Warner spending time with his family while being away from cricket.
“He’s coming back with a huge hunger, not just to perform well for his franchise, but to dominate international cricket again. When you have your dream taken away from you for 12 months, I can imagine there’s something inside you that burns really strongly,” Finch was quoted as saying to Melbourne commercial radio on Wednesday.
“He’s a super player, we know how destructive he can be. I think having time off to spend with his family and get away from the game (was important),” he added.
