ICC World Cup 2019: Aaron Finch ready to move down the order in the Australian batting lineup
"Personal results aren’t what this side is about."
Five-time World Cup champions and current defending champion- the Australian team- was having the worst time in limited-overs format ever since their two batting stars Steve Smith and David Warner were banned for one year each for their roles in the ball-tampering scandal in Cape Town Test in South Africa in 2018.
The duo’s ban will end on March 30, but the duo won’t be joining the Australia team in Dubai during their ODI series against Pakistan. But they have joined their respective franchise in the upcoming IPL 2019. Both Smith and Warner are expected to join the Australia team for the ICC World Cup 2019 in England and Wales.
Tim Paine was named the ODI captain for the home series against England, but after the loss in the series, Finch was named the captain, but things didn’t change much. To top that, an out-of-form Aaron Finch became more of a liability to the team rather than an asset.
Ready to bat down the order if necessary, says Finch
Aaron Finch said that he is willing to move down the batting order to let Steve Smith and David Warner bat at their original positions. Finch’s position at the top is also challenged by the emergence of Usman Khawaja, who reeled off 383 runs in the ODI series against India, including two centuries and helped the Australian team defeat India in the latter’s own den.
“If that means me batting at six, I’ll comfortably do that. If it’s at the top, three or four – it doesn’t matter. Personal results aren’t what this side is about. I think that’s what has made our improvement as dramatic and quick as it has been. If you go in just solely focused on scoring a hundred or thinking ‘if I bat five, I’m not got to get a hundred, I don’t get enough opportunity’, that’s not what is best,” Finch was quoted as saying by News 18.
