ICC World Cup 2019: Ajay Jadeja picks MS Dhoni as India’s captain for the tournament
Dhoni has captained India in 200 ODIs thus far.
MS Dhoni has given up the captaincy from all the formats a couple of years ago after which Virat Kohli became the Indian skipper in the three formats of the sport. Recently, Dhoni temporarily returned as the captain in the Asia Cup back in September last year. Virat Kohli didn’t play the tournament and Rohit Sharma rested himself for the match against Afghanistan in Dubai.
Hence, Dhoni got his chance to lead the team for the 200th time in ODIs, albeit he couldn’t guide his team to a victory. Ever since Kohli and Rohit Sharma have shouldered the leadership mantle of the national team. With the World Cup in England and Wales scheduled to be played from Thursday, May 30, the experienced Kohli is certain to captain the Indian team.
No Shankar in Jadeja’s squad
However, former Indian batsman Ajay Jadeja has picked Dhoni as his captain for the mega event. He put forth his Indian squad in the studios of Cricbuzz where Gaurav Kapur and Zaheer Khan were also present. The 48-year-old veteran also went for off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, who hasn’t played white-ball cricket for India for more than one and a half year now.
There has been a debate over who among Dinesh Karthik and Rishabh Pant should be Dhoni’s backup wicketkeeper. Nevertheless, Jadeja has gone for both of them. He didn’t go for Vijay Shankar, who is currently a part of the squad for the five-match ODI series against the Aussies.
Jadeja thinks that one of Shikhar Dhawan and KL Rahul should get the nod eventually. Dhawan was one of India’s leading run-scorers last year in limited-overs cricket. On the other hand, Rahul has strained to find his feet but found some form in the two-match T20I series against Australia.
Here is Jadeja’s squad
Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan/KL Rahul, Virat Kohli, MS Dhoni (C & WK), Rishabh Pant, Dinesh Karthik, Ambati Rayudu, Hardik Pandya, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Kuldeep Yadav, Yuzvendra Chahal, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, Ravindra Jadeja, Ravichandran Ashwin
