ICC World Cup 2019: Ambati Rayudu ready to bat at any position for the team
In two innings that he played in England, Rayudu registered two fifties and scored 117 runs.
Over the last few days, there have been several talks about the Indian batting order heading into the World Cup 2019. There were some thoughts from the management to bat Virat Kohli at four during the mega-event. In the last few months, Ambati Rayudu made this position his own and found a great deal of success. However, if Kohli indeed bats at four, Rayudu will have to sacrifice his batting position.
This could essentially mean that he will either be slotted down the order or will have to bat at three. The second option looks more likely for the 33-year-old as he has played a fair amount of cricket at that position. Rayudu also opened the innings for his IPL franchise, Chennai Super Kings, and is capable of dealing with the swing. The right-hander, though, is ready to bat at any position for the team.
Need different approach for different batting positions
Since Ambati Rayudu has played at almost all the positions, he knows the demands of each of them. In a chat with Harsha Bhogle ahead of the first ODI against Australia, Rayudu shared his thoughts about his batting position. He pointed out that he was happy with his current position but doesn’t want to back off from playing at any other slot.
The cricketer, captaining Hyderabad in the Syed Mushtaq Ali tournament, even batted at five as per the demands of the team. He said that the approach needs to be different for different batting positions and mentioned that the loss in New Zealand (where he scored 90) hurt him.
“Your approach has to be different when you are batting at different positions. Fortunately, I have played at different positions all my career. (On the 90 against New Zealand) I didn’t think too much, but during the game, we felt really sad because we lost the match. We needed to prove a point to ourselves that we are good enough,” said Ambati Rayudu in the interview.
