ICC World Cup 2019: Australia contemplating playing both Adam Zampa and Nathan Lyon
"It’s a good combination,"- Trevor Horns.
Australia won the five-match ODI series against India 3-2 after going 0-2 down and the triumph would’ve come as a sigh of relief to them as they tasted victory after quite a significant amount of time. While their batting did splendidly, the bowlers didn’t flatter to deceive, one of them was Adam Zampa, who picked up 11 wickets from five matches with best figures of 3/46 in New Delhi.
The Aussies also gave Nathan Lyon chances in three games and even the off-spinner wasn’t bad with an economy rate of 4.43, albeit he could only get three batsmen out. Now the Australian team management is thinking about playing both of them in the upcoming World Cup, scheduled to get underway on Thursday, May 30. Australia will play their first game against Afghanistan.
We can’t bury our heads in the sand
“Nathan we know is a world-class bowler … very experienced. Zampa is coming along quite nicely, so we’re comfortable at the moment. It’s a good combination,” Trevor Hohns, the chairman of selectors was quoted as saying in Fox Sports.
He also understands the importance of including at least one spinner in the squad for the mega event. “Most teams around the world seem to be including one at least and probably two spinners in their World Cup squad. We expect them to.
We can’t bury our heads in the sand and just say we’re going with fast bowlers when spinners in world cricket, and in one-day cricket in particular, are being very, very successful,” the chairman added.
Furthermore, Horns said that the tracks may be a little worn in the latter part of the tournament and hence, spinners are likely to come into play. England and India are being considered two of the favourites and both have a couple of quality spinners each in their ranks.
