Carlos Brathwaite, the Barbados-born Windies all-rounder, has been reprimanded for showing dissent at an umpire’s decision during their World Cup 2019 match versus England on May 14 at the Rose Bowl in Southampton. The 30-year-old has received an official reprimand and has also been slapped with one demerit point for breaching Level One of the ICC Code of Conduct.
In the 43rd over of the Windies’ innings, Carlos showed displeasure to the umpires after he was given out caught behind off Jofra Archer. Albeit the UltraEdge displayed that there was an edge through to the keeper Jos Buttler, the batsman didn’t look happy the decision by any means. In the game, Brathwaite could only manage 14 runs from 22 balls with the help of one six.
Thereafter, the experienced cricketer admitted the offence and he accepted the sanction proposed by David Boon, the Match Referee. There wasn’t any requirement of a formal hearing. On-field umpires Kumar Dharmasena and Sundaram Ravi, third-umpire Rodney Tucker and fourth official Pau Wilson levelled the charges on Brathwaite.
Another loss for the Windies
As far as the game is concerned, the Windies lost the match by eight wickets with 101 deliveries to spare. Nicholas Pooran scored 63 off 78 to steady the ship and he got out to Archer. Chris Gayle and Shimron Hetmyer got into the 30s, but neither could go on and convert their starts. In the end, Jason Holder and Co were shot out for an under par 212 in 44.4 overs.
For the Three Lions, Mark Wood and Archer picked up three wickets each. Joe Root turned out to be the man with the golden arm, getting the important wickets of Hetmyer and captain Holder. Thereafter, Root turned up with a masterful century with 11 fours to help the Brits chase the target down in 33.1 overs. Jonny Bairstow and Chris Woakes churned out handy knocks of 45 and 40 as well.
After losing the match, the Windies are now placed sixth in the points table with three points from four matches. Their next match is versus Mashrafe Mortaza’s Bangladesh on June 17 at The Cooper Associates County Ground in Taunton.
