The twelfth edition of the ICC World Cup will kick off on May 30 with the match between hosts England and South Africa at the Oval. This will be the fifth time that the quadrennial tournament will be held in England after 1975, 1979, 1983 and 1999. Australia have won the tournament the most number of times (five) and are the reigning champions. India and the Windies have won the tournament twice each and Pakistan and Sri Lanka once each.

We take a look at performances of teams at the World Cup as per the current ICC rankings in the ODIs. The upcoming edition will be a 10-team affair and it will be the first time that a World Cup will not feature all the Test-playing nations (Zimbabwe and Ireland miss out) and only the second time since 1992 where there will be no groups and each team will be playing the other and the top four will qualify for the semi-finals.

England, the hosts, are also the No.1 team in the ODIs at the moment. They will start as one of the favourites to win their maiden title this time as their talent and form will have another advantage and that is about home conditions.

Here we take a look at England’s history at the World Cup since 1975 when the tournament started

England have played 73 matches in World Cup till date, winning 41, losing 30 while one was tied and another ending inconclusive. Their best results in the tournament have been finishing as the runners-up thrice – 1979, 1987 and 1992. Graham Gooch remained the only batsman to have featured in all three finals played in three different decades.

England started their World Cup journey with a bang, defeating India by 202 runs in their first-ever game. They lost to South Africa by 78 runs and Pakistan by 7 wickets and after qualifying as the fourth team from the group for the quarters, England were blown away by Sanath Jayasuriya’s 44-ball 82 as Sri Lanka beat them by 5 wickets with almost 10 overs to spare.

The only game they lost was the second game against New Zealand by two wickets after they won the first by 106 runs. The hosts beat Pakistan by 8 and 7 wickets and Sri Lanka by 47 runs and 9 wickets. However, they could not tackle India in the semi-finals as the eventual champions led by Kapil Dev beat them by 6 wickets at Old Trafford.</p>

Starting with an 11-run loss to New Zealand, the Three Lions could not beat any Test-playing opponent in the side but only debutants United Arab Emirates by 8 wickets and the Netherlands by 49 runs.</p>
<p>They lost to South Africa by 78 runs and Pakistan by 7 wickets and after qualifying as the fourth team from the group for the quarters, England were blown away by Sanath Jayasuriya’s 44-ball 82 as Sri Lanka beat them by 5 wickets with almost 10 overs to spare.</p>

It was all over for the Englishmen as they fell two short of Zimbabwe’s 14 points to crash out. This edition was held in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Kenya.</p>

<p>England crossed the preliminary hurdle of the group stage in a World Cup after 11 years though fell short of a spot in the semifinals. Led by Michael Vaughan this time, England started by losing to New Zealand by 6 wickets but defeated two non-Test playing nations – Canada by 51 runs and Kenya by 7 wickets &#8212; to proceed to the Super 8 stage.</p>
<p>In the next stage, Vaughan’s side beat Ireland by 48 runs, Bangladesh by 4 wickets and hosts Windies by 1 wicket. But they lost to Sri Lanka by 2 runs, to Australia by 7 wickets and South Africa by 9 wickets. With six points from seven games, the Three Lions finished fifth in the table and were eliminated.</p>

Andrew Strauss’ side, however, had quite a chequered journey in the group stage of this World Cup. They started by beating the Netherlands by 6 wickets and tied the second game with India in Bengaluru.</p>
<p>England then suffered a shock defeat to Ireland by 3 wickets and beat South Africa in a close game by 6 runs to remain alive in the tournament. The Three Lions then lost to Bangladesh by 2 wickets but registered a timely victory over the Windies by 18 runs in their final match to qualify for the last eight. The quarter-final was a complete no-show just like that of the 1996 game as Sri Lanka blew away England by 10 wickets.</p>
