World Cup 1979; lost in final to Windies:

Led by Mike Brearley, England started well in the second edition too, winning against Australia by 6 wickets, Canada by 8 wickets and Pakistan by 14 runs to top the group. England then had a close win over New Zealand by 9 runs in the semi-final played at Old Trafford but were routed by the formidable Windies by 92 runs. World Cup 1983; lost in semis to India:

Captained by Bob Willis this time, England again had a fairly good run in the group stages, winning five of their six games against New Zealand, Pakistan and Sri Lanka (twice against each opponent). The only game they lost was the second game against New Zealand by two wickets after they won the first by 106 runs. The hosts beat Pakistan by 8 and 7 wickets and Sri Lanka by 47 runs and 9 wickets. However, they could not tackle India in the semi-finals as the eventual champions led by Kapil Dev beat them by 6 wickets at Old Trafford.
