World Cup 1996; lost in the quarter-final to Sri Lanka:
The 1996 edition which was held in India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka saw Michael Atherton’s England doing pretty ordinary. Starting with an 11-run loss to New Zealand, the Three Lions could not beat any Test-playing opponent in the side but only debutants United Arab Emirates by 8 wickets and the Netherlands by 49 runs.
They lost to South Africa by 78 runs and Pakistan by 7 wickets and after qualifying as the fourth team from the group for the quarters, England were blown away by Sanath Jayasuriya’s 44-ball 82 as Sri Lanka beat them by 5 wickets with almost 10 overs to spare.
World Cup 1999; failed to progress beyond group stage:
The World Cup was back in England after 16 years but the hosts failed to progress beyond the group stage, for the first time. In the group, England beat defending champions Sri Lanka by 8 wickets, Kenya by 9 wickets and Zimbabwe by 7 wickets but lost to South Africa by 122 runs and India in a crunch match by 63 runs. They ended with the same points with India and Zimbabwe but failed to make it to the Super Six because of inferior net-run-rate. Alec Stewart was the captain of England in this edition.
