ICC World Cup 2019: Injury scare for England’s Jason Roy ahead of the tournament
Since the start of 2018, Roy has scored 1019 runs at an average of 42.46, including four centuries.
The ICC World Cup 2019 will be played from May 30 in England and Wales and the hosts England are being considered to be heavy favourites to lift their first ever 50-overs ICC trophy. Recently the England and Wales Cricket Board announced their preliminary squad for the upcoming mega ICC event. There was the name of opener Jason Roy in the list.
Roy is considered to be one of the most prolific openers and a lynchpin in Eoin Morgan and Andrew Strauss’s new look England ODI and T20I teams after the debacle of 2015 edition of World Cup. However, recently, playing for Surrey against Essex in Royal London One-Day Cup clash Roy suffered a potential injury scare.
Jason Roy hurts his back in one-day against Essex
He decided not to be a part of IPL 2019 auction, and now has, unfortunately, suffered a blow to the thigh during Surrey’s clash with Essex in Royal London One-Day Cup, played at the Oval.
The first delivery of the fourth bowled by Peter Siddle struck the right-handed opener on the thigh and Roy was in immediate pain. He made it to the non-striker’s end and received treatment from the physio. He tried to continue on bravely but had to retire hurt after playing three more balls, for a score of 16.
It was first thought that he had gone down with a recurrence of his hamstring injury before it was later confirmed that is was a case of a back spasm. And this injury comes in the long list of recent setbacks for him.
Earlier, a hamstring injury in a County Championship match versus Essex robbed Roy of making a claim for England’s Tests side.
Roy was a part of that disastrous campaign for England but was noticed for his aggressive stroke play. He has transformed into one of the most dangerous openers and holds the record for the highest ODI score by an England batsman in ODI cricket – 180 against Australia. Since the start of 2018, he has scored 1019 runs at an average of 42.46, including four centuries.
