It was Joe Root who had a field day for England against the Windies at The Rose Bowl in Southampton. The Caribbeans never really turned up in the game thanks to some superb bowling from the hosts up front after which the batsmen did their job to perfection to climb the second spot in the points table. Windies, on the other hand, suffered second defeat in four matches and stand sixth in the table with only 3 points to their name.

After being put in to bat first, the Men in Maroon lost Evin Lewis quickly and despite a partnership between Chris Gayle and Shai Hope, they were left reeling at 55/3 after around 14 overs. From here on, Nicholas Pooran and Shimron Hetmyer rebuilt the innings. They added 89 runs together and this was the only phase when the Caribbeans looked dominating.

However, Hetmyer, after looking good with some of his shots, threw his wicket away to Joe Root. The same bowler then scalped the Windies skipper Jason Holder which triggered a collapse. From 144/3, the Windies were skittled for 212 runs in the 45th over. Pooran was the top scorer for them with 63 runs while Jofra Archer and Mark Wood picked three wickets each with the ball for England.

Root dominates Windies

Despite the injuries to Jason Roy and Eoin Morgan, England had no problems in chasing down the moderate total. Joe Root opened the innings along with Jonny Bairstow to provide the team with a great start. They weathered the short ball barrage of the opposition successfully and scored runs easily after settling in the middle. Bairstow once again missed out on scoring big but his partner Root didn’t.

England’s original number three went on to slam his second century of the tournament and remained unbeaten on 100. Chris Woakes was promoted to number three and even enjoyed batting scoring 40 runs off 54 balls. England got over the line in the 34th over of the innings to seal the deal and it was Ben Stokes who scored the winning runs for them. Shannon Gabriel was the only wicket-taker for Windies who returned with the figures of 2/49 in his seven overs.
