Back during the warm-up stage, the Windies churned out a 400 plus total against New Zealand. However, coming half-way through the main round of the 2019 World Cup, both teams have absolutely experienced contrasting fortunes. The Black Caps are placed second in the points table with nine points from five matches. Their next game is versus Jason Holder and Co at the Old Trafford in Manchester.
The Caribbean team, on the other hand, started with a resounding victory against Pakistan at the Trent Bridge in Nottingham. Unfortunately, their campaign has fallen apart badly. With only three points from five matches, Holder’s men are precariously placed seventh and are in dire requirement of a victory. In the history of the World Cup, New Zealand beat the Windies four times in their last five meetings.
Weather Report
There is no rain threat whatsoever in tomorrow’s match. There will be around 70 per cent cloud cover, but it won’t convert into a downpour. The temperature will hover around the 19 Degrees Celsius. The humidity won’t be on the higher side with the numbers in the 60s.
Pitch Report
Out of 47 completed ODIs at the venue, 20 went in favour of the team batting second. However, in the ongoing World Cup, the chasing teams haven’t had the advantage by any means. India and England have beaten their opponents by 89 and 150 runs respectively. Hence, it would be more sensible to put runs on the board and then exert pressure on the opposition.
Playing combinations
Windies
The Caribbean team is likely to bring in Carlos Brathwaite in place of Darren Bravo. Their bowling has been a tad below par and Carlos gives them the additional bowling option. Shannon Gabriel conceded runs at an economy of over nine versus the Tigers and he may have to make way for Kemar Roach. Andre Russell’s knee issue will also be a matter of concern for the team.
In the batting line-up, Gayle has been a tad inconsistent after his fifty in the first match. Shai Hope has scored 186 runs, but the strike-rate of 68.13 needs to go up. Evin Lewis got a much-needed boost after his 70 in the erstwhile match. Nicholas Pooran’s red-hot form is also a positive sign for the Caribbeans. Jason Holder has blown a bit hot and cold and he needs to be on top of his game.
Probable XI
Chris Gayle, Evin Lewis, Shai Hope (wk), Nicholas Pooran, Shimron Hetmyer, Andre Russell, Jason Holder (C), Carlos Brathwaite, Oshane Thomas, Sheldon Cottrell, Kemar Roach.

New Zealand
The Kiwis are unbeaten after five matches and may not make any changes to their eleven. Martin Guptill and Colin Munro have gotten the decent scores, but the team will want their openers to convert the starts. Kane Williamson must be brimming with confidence after his match-winning century versus the Proteas. He has been dismissed only once in the tournament and he’ll be a key.
Ross Taylor succumbed to a rare failure the last time and he’ll be keen to make amends. Tom Latham hasn’t quite got going and he’ll want to hit his straps at the earliest. James Neesham and Colin de Grandhomme are in decent enough form. In the bowling attack, Lockie Ferguson has been their standout performer with 11 wickets. Trent Boult has been economical but needs to pick up wickets.
Probable XI
Martin Guptill, Colin Munro, Kane Williamson (C), Ross Taylor, Tom Latham, James Neesham, Colin de Grandhomme, Mitchell Santner, Matt Henry, Lockie Ferguson, Trent Boult.
Probable Top Performer
Chris Gayle – Windies | Ross Taylor – New Zealand
