Australia had their moments of stutter during their match against New Zealand. But they weathered the storm and thumped Kane Williamson’s men by 86 runs at the Lord’s. Meanwhile, Aaron Finch and Co are growing in stature with the progression of every match and now go up to 14 points. For the Black Caps, they are yet to qualify for the semi-finals with one encounter left versus Eoin Morgan’s England.
The Kiwis made a dream start after being put into bowl first. David Warner, Aaron Finch and Steve Smith got out inside the first 12 overs. Even as Trent Boult trapped Finch in front, Lockie Ferguson bounced out both Smith and Warner. Martin Guptill took a miraculous catch at leg gully to remove the former. Marcus Stoinis looked good for his 21 with three fours and he perished to James Neesham.
Glenn Maxwell’s indifferent run in the mega event continued as Neesham took a sharp catch off his own bowling. Thereafter, Alex Carey and Usman Khawaja staged a comeback for the Aussies with a 107-run stand. It was Williamson, who dismissed Carey for 71 and broke the stand. Khawaja’s knock ended on 88, perishing to Boult, who nipped out Mitchell Starc and Jason Behrendorff to notch a hat-trick.
Australia demolish the Black Caps
The opening muddle for the Kiwis didn’t end. Henry Nicholls came in place of Colin Munro, but Behrendorff dismissed him on eight. Martin Guptill’s poor run of form continued as he managed 20 off 43. However, Williamson and Ross Taylor steadied the ship with a 55-run stand. Unfortunately, Starc found Kane’s outside edge after the New Zealand skipper scored 40 off 51 balls with two boundaries and a six.
Ross Taylor tried to be patient with a 54-ball 30 and became Pat Cummins’ victim. Following his dismissal, things went downhill for the Black Caps far too quickly. Smith couldn’t score much but churned out Colin de Grandhomme’s prized wicket. Neesham also had an off day with the bat. Starc picked up his second five-wicket haul of this World Cup and took the Aussies to their seventh victory.
