The defending champions Australia cruised to yet another win as they thumped the 2015 finalists New Zealand by 86 runs. On a sluggish track at the Lord’s, the Aussies were five down for 92. Usman Khawaja batted through the innings scoring 88 off 129 balls while Alex Carey struck 72-ball 71 with 11 fours.
The duo added 107 runs for the 6th wicket to push the total to 243/9 before Trent Boult took a hat-trick in the final over. New Zealand found themselves nowhere near the chase against a quality Australian bowling attack. Mitchell Starc ran through the Blackcaps with yet another 5-fer.
All the statistical highlights from Australia’s convincing 86-run win against New Zealand at the Lord’s:
End of a New Zealand streak:
10 – This defeat brought an end to New Zealand’s 10-match winning streak while chasing a target in the World Cups; the 2nd longest streak for any side. Their last defeat in CWC while chasing came against Sri Lanka in the 2011 league match at the Wankhede. Australia has the best streak in CWC chases as they won 19 in a row since 1999 until India ended it earlier in the tournament.
1 – For the first time since the start of the 2007 edition, New Zealand failed to chase a target less than 260 in the World Cup match. This was the 15th time the Kiwis were chasing such a small target in the last 13 years of World Cup and ended up on the winning side on 14 occasions.
Starc sweeps CWC records:
1 – Mitchell Starc became the first player to claim three 5-wicket hauls in the history of World Cup. As many as five bowlers before Starc have taken two 5-fers in the CWC but none of them went on to take one more.
6 – This was the 6th time Starc picked up four and more wickets in a CWC match. He is also the first player with six 4-wicket hauls in the World Cup. Starc went past Imran Tahir’s tally of five 4-fers in the World Cups.
2 – Mitchell Starc has taken two 5-fers against New Zealand across three World Cup games. He is also the first player with two 5-fers against a single opponent.
Starc’s 13 wickets against the Kiwis are also the 2nd most by any player against a single opponent. Muttiah Muralitharan has taken 13 wickets from five games also against the Blackcaps.
4 – Number of 4-wicket hauls for Mitchell Starc in this tournament; the joint-most by any player in an ODI series/tournament. Shahid Afridi also had four 4-fers during the 2011 CWC edition.
The rescue act:
107 – The 107-run partnership between Usman Khawaja and Alex Carey is Australia’s highest stand for the 6th wicket in the World Cup. The duo went past the 99-run stand between R Edwards and R Marsh in 1975 group stage game against the Windies.
This 107-run stand is also the highest for Australia in CWC for the 6th or lower wicket by surpassing the partnership of 102 runs between Steve Smith and Nathan Coulter-Nile against the Windies in this tournament.
71 – Alex Carey’s 71 is the highest individual score for Australia in World Cup while batting at No.7. Carey broke the record held by Shane Watson with his unbeaten 65 from 32 balls in the 2007 edition also against New Zealand. While batting at No.7 or lower, only Nathan Coulter-Nile (92 vs Windies, 2019 at No.8) has scored more runs in a CWC innings for Australia than Carey.
A hat-trick in loss:
1 – Trent Boult became the first player from New Zealand to bag a hat-trick at the World Cup. His hat-trick was the 11th in the World Cups but only the 3rd to be on losing side. Lasith Malinga against South Africa in 2007 and Steve Finn against Australia in 2015 took hat-tricks in defeats.
5 – Boult is only the 5th player with multiple hat-tricks in the ODI format. He picked up a hat-trick against Pakistan during the last year’s series in UAE. Lasith Malinga has three hat-tricks while Saqlain Mushtaq, Chaminda Vaas and Wasim Akram have two hat-tricks apiece in ODI cricket.
Williamson @ 6000:
139 – Kane Williamson became the 3rd fastest player to complete 6000 runs in ODI cricket. Kane required 139 innings for the milestone, while the top two Hashim Amla and Virat Kohli needed 123 and 136 innings respectively.
A left-arm pacer’s delight:
11 – Number of wickets the left-arm pacers shared between them in this ODI; only the third time left-arm pacers bagged 11+ wickets in a single ODI. During the 2015 CWC group game between New Zealand and Australia, a total of 12 wickets were shared between the left-arm quicks.
The game between these two sides in 2017 hosted by Hamilton also had the same count. All the 11 wickets during this match at Lord’s were claimed by the bowlers while sharing the new ball; the joint-most by left-arm pacers while opening the bowling in an ODI. The 2015 CWC match in Auckland also had 11 such wickets.
