ICC World Cup 2019: Match 43, Pakistan vs Bangladesh – Shaheen’s spectacular effort, Imam’s record ton and more stats

Pakistan bowed out of the World Cup 2019 with a 94-run win against Bangladesh which wasn’t enough for them to seal a place in the semi-final. Needing over a winning margin of 300+ runs, Pakistan elected to bat first but never showed signs of scoring big. Imam-ul-Haq (100), Babar Azam (96) and Imad Wasim’s cameo (43) at the end helped Pakistan to finish on 315/9.

New Zealand were confirmed as the 4th semi-finalist when Pakistan conceded the 8th run. Bangladesh, in their maiden ODI game at the Lord’s, had batsmen getting starts but failing to make it big. Shakib Al Hasan (64) once again put his best with the bat before Shaheen Shah Afridi cleaned up the Bangladesh line-up with his 6/35 in 9.1 overs.

Pakistan finally beats Bangladesh:

2014 – For the first time since 2014, Pakistan defeated Bangladesh in an ODI game. The last instance of them getting better of the Tigers in an ODI was during a last-over thriller in the 2014 Asia Cup.

Bangladesh won all four ODIs against Pakistan between 2015 and 2018. This was also the first World Cup win for Pakistan over Bangladesh as they lost their first and only other CWC meeting – in 1999 by 62 runs.

Shaheen breaks World Cup records:

19y 90d – Shaheen Shah Afridi became the youngest player to take a 5-wicket haul in World Cup. He broke the record held by Collins Obuya (21y 212d) with his 5-fer against Sri Lanka in 2003. Shaheen is obviously the youngest player with a CWC 6-fer as the previous youngest was Kemar Roach (22y 243d) with his 6/27 against the Netherlands in 2013. In the previous game against Afghanistan, Shaheen became the youngest player with a 4-wicket haul in the World Cup.

19y 90d – At the age of 19 years and 90 days, Shaheen is also the 4th youngest player with an ODI 6-wicket haul. He is also the youngest left-arm bowler with an ODI 6-fer bettering Mustafizur Rahman (19y 288d) who took 6/43 in his 2nd ODI in 2015 against India.

16 – Shaheen Shah has picked up 16 wickets from only five matches in this tournament; the most number of wickets in a World Cup by a teenager. Abdul Razzaq had 13 wickets in the 1999 edition at the age of 19.

Shaheen scripts the firsts for Pakistan:

1 – Shaheen Shah Afridi became the first left-arm bowler to pick up a 6-wicket haul for Pakistan in ODI history. There are 11 five-fers recorded by Pakistan left-arm bowlers in ODIs before Shaheen but none ended up with six wickets.

6/35 – Shaheen Shah is also the first player to take a 6-wicket haul for Pakistan in World Cup. Shahid Afridi’s 5/16 against Kenya in the 2011 edition were the previous best bowling figures in a World Cup game for Pakistan.

Shakib continues his rich form with the bat:

1 – Shakib Al Hasan became the first player to cross the 600-run mark in the group stages of a World Cup. Sachin Tendulkar’s 586 runs before the knockouts in the 2003 edition were the previous most.

Imam and Babar set Pakistan records:

23y 205d – At the age of 23 years and 205 days, Imam-ul-Haq became the youngest player from Pakistan to score a World Cup hundred. Saleem Malik was Pakistan’s previous youngest CWC centurion as he was 24 years and 192 days old when he scored 100 against Sri Lanka in 1987.

36 – Innings Imam needed to score his 7th century in the ODI format; the 2nd fewest innings taken by any player. Babar Azam got is 7th ODI hundred in his 33rd innings in this format.

474 – Babar Azam finished the tournament with 474 runs in eight innings; the most by Pakistan player in a World Cup. Babar went past Javed Miandad’s tally of 437 runs came across nine innings in the 1992 edition.

Mustafizur gets another 5-fer:

3 – Mustafizur Rahman is now the 3rd player with consecutive 5-wicket hauls in World Cup. Gary Gilmour took 5-fers in only two matches he played in his CWC career while Ashantha de Mel replicated this feat in the 1983 edition.

2 – This was the 2nd time Mustafizur took back to back 5-fers in ODI cricket; the first such instance was in his first two ODIs against India in 2015. The left-arm pacer is only the 2nd bowler in ODI history with back to back 5-fers on two different instances. Waqar Younis had three such streaks including the only instance of three straight 5-fers in 1990.

54 – Matches Mustafizur Rahman has taken to complete 100 wickets in ODI cricket. He is the joint 4th fastest player to reach 100 ODI wickets and easily the fastest from Bangladesh. Abdur Razzaq was the previous fastest among Bangladesh bowlers as he needed 69 ODIs; which are 15 more than what Mustafizur needed.

5 – Mustafizur is also the first Bangladesh player with five 5-wicket hauls in ODI cricket surpassing Abdur Razzak who has four 4-fers in this format.

5/75 – Mustafizur conceded 75 runs during his 5-wicket haul; the 2nd most runs conceded by any player for a 5-fer in ODI format. Adil Rashid was taken for 85 runs during the Grenada ODI this year against the Windies. The previous most runs conceded in a World Cup 5-fer by any player are 71 runs by Steven Finn in the 2015 edition game against Australia.

A game of Left-arm bowlers:

13 – As many as 13 wickets fell to the left-arm pacers in this game which are the most in an ODI. The previous most was 12 wickets during the New Zealand-Australia 2015 CWC game hosted by Auckland and also in the 2017 Hamilton ODI between these two sides.

The last week’s NZ-AUS game hosted by the Lord’s witnessed the left-arm pacers sharing 11 wickets. The 13 wickets in this BAN-PAK match are also the 4th most by left-arm bowlers in an ODI game.

2 – Only the 2nd time two left-arm bowlers picked up 5-wicket hauls in the same ODI match. Mustafizur bagged 5-fer while Shaheen Shah finished the game with six wickets. The other such ODI was the group stage match between Australia and New Zealand in 2015 CWC where Trent Boult picked up five wickets while Mitchell Starc replied with a 6-wicket haul.

Mortaza’s misery ends:

361 – Mashrafe Mortaza’s bowling average of 361 in this tournament is the worst in an ODI series/tournament for any player. (Min: 50 overs) Mortaza bowled 56 overs and conceded 361 runs by picking up only one wicket – Jonny Bairstow. Javagal Srinath averaged 258 in the 1996 Titan Cup where he bagged only one wicket. No other player has a bowling average over 150 in any series/tournament.

A teenager on Lord’s board:

19y 90d – Shaheen Shah Afridi became the 2nd youngest player to be on the Lord’s honours board. His fellow left-arm pacer Mohammad Amir was 18 years and 136 days old when he picked a 5-wicket haul in 2010 Test match against the hosts.

No winning luck for Shakib:

642 – Shakib Al Hasan has 642 runs to his name in World Cup coming in defeats. These are the joint-most number of runs scored by any player in the lost matches at World Cup. Sachin Tendulkar also has exactly 642 runs across 16 Indian losses in World Cup.

4 – Shakib is only the 2nd player with as many as four fifty-plus scores in losses during a CWC edition. Mohammad Azharuddin was the first player with this unfortunate record. Shakib has a total of six 50+ scores in CWC losses. Steve Tikolo (7) and Azharuddin (6) are the other players with as many as six scores of fifty and more in World Cup defeats.
