ICC World Cup 2019: Michael Vaughan believes Jofra Archer will make it to England squad
Archer has been included for the ODI series against Pakistan.
England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), on April 17, announced a preliminary 15-man squad for the upcoming ICC World Cup 2019. They also announced an extended 17-man squad for the five-match ODI series against Pakistan in May. One big news was that the name of Jofra Archer was missing from the World Cup squad.
Barbados-born Archer, who plays for Sussex in the English County circuit, became eligible to play for England as the ECB reduced qualification period from seven years to three years. The right-handed batsman and bowler, who is capable of hitting the high 140 kmph speed, Archer has lighted up the T20 leagues all over the world and has impressed in his appearances in the Big Bash League and the Indian Premier League (IPL), apart from the T20 Blast in England.
ECB announced that Archer will make his debut in ODI cricket against Pakistan and that the final 15-man squad will be announced after the culmination of that series. This means there is hope that Archer may make it to the World Cup 2019 at home and play for England in it.
Michael Vaughan backs Archer to make it into the World Cup
Former England captain-turned-commentator Michael Vaughan has said that he believes Jofra Archer will make it into the final England squad for the ICC World Cup 2019. “The selection panel has been impressed with Jofra Archer’s performances in domestic and franchise cricket. He is a very talented and exciting cricketer,” National selector Ed Smith was quoted as saying by ESPNCricinfo.
Archer may make his way into the World Cup squad if he performs well against Pakistan and Vaughan believes that he should be the first-choice given he proves his quality in the ODI series against the Men in Green. “He can make a big impact. If Jofra Archer’s fit and playing, going alright, can get mixed into the group, he walks straight into the XI,” Vaughan was quoted as saying by Omnisport.
“You need to see no players getting injured. A Jos Buttler missing out for England would be a huge loss, [he] can’t be replaced at one-day level. If England has a fully fit squad, they’re going to go a long way to winning,” the former England captain added further.
Vaughan also tweeted, “Preliminary Squads are for a bit of Admin for the ICC … Jofra Archer will be In the Official World Cup squad … !!! #JustSaying”
