Pakistan after losing their warm-up match against Afghanistan slumped to a seven-wicket defeat at the hands of the Windies in their first game. The pitch at the Trent Bridge in Nottingham is deemed as a batting paradise, but Sarfaraz Ahmed and Co floundered on such a track, getting bowled out for a paltry 105 in a mere 21.4 overs. The conditions were overcast and the Windies opted to field first.

Even Pakistan wanted the same, but it didn’t happen. Fakhar Zaman and Imam-ul-Haq looked good for a brief while after which Sheldon Cottrell nipped Imam out. Babar Azam, Mohammad Hafeez, Wahab Riaz and Fakhar himself got into double figures and Pakistan tantalizingly got over the 100-run mark. The bounce generated by the Caribbean pacers turned out to be too hot to handle for the batters.

Pakistan collapse significantly

The Windies didn’t need to introduce Ashley Nurse, their lone spinner and barring Carlos Brathwaite, each of their speedsters picked up at least one wicket. The bowlers mixed their lengths and used the bouncer to an excellent effect. Andre Russell picked up two wickets to start the carnage. Thereafter, skipper Jason Holder and the hulk-like Oshane Thomas came to the party.

Both ran through the Pakistan lower order and Even as Thomas picked up four wickets, Holder got three wickets. Thomas even went on to become the Player of the Match for his hostile spell. During the Windies’ run-chase, Chris Gayle came out firing on all cylinders. He didn’t die wondering and scored a magnificent fifty to make the game a completely one-sided affair.

Nicholas Pooran churned out a quickfire 34 off 19 balls with four boundaries and a couple of sixes. Mohammad Amir picked up three wickets, but his efforts were never going to be enough for Pakistan to make a comeback by any stretch of the imagination.

The Windies won with 218 balls to spare. In the meantime, former Indian cricketer Mohammad Kaif lauded the Caribbean unit and put forth what they are capable of. Nevertheless, he also took a jibe at Pakistan for experiencing a batting collapse.

He took to Twitter and wrote, “Just 212 balls in the game and it’s over. West Indies, showing what they are capable of, and Pakistan too.#WIvPAK,”
