Ever since Sarfaraz Ahmed was suspended for four matches by the ICC for his racial comments during the South Africa tour, there have been speculations that the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) doesn’t want him to lead the team in the World Cup. Shoaib Malik‘s name was doing the rounds for the job. However, the board has formally decided to name Sarfaraz as the captain for the mega event in England to end all the rumours regarding the position.
Sarfaraz was also called back midway through the tour as his ban was ending with only one T20I remaining. There was no point in staying with the team only for the solitary game which was the reason, the PCB called him back.
But there were a lot of speculations about the rift in Sarfaraz and Shoaib which has been quashed by the former recently. Moreover, the PCB’s stance of announcing the captain for the World Cup only after the PSL complicated the matter even more.
PCB Chairman in favour of Sarfaraz
According to the reports in the Daily Express, the PCB is set to announce Sarfaraz Ahmed as the captain of Pakistan team for the World Cup which will start from May 30. The sources reveal that the PCB Chairman Ehsan Mani was never in favour of removing Sarfaraz from the helm. Pakistan have won the Champions Trophy 2017 under the same player and the board seems to be backing for the World Cup as well which will take place in England.
Meanwhile, the four-match ban could be seen as a blessing in disguise for the 31-year-old having played continuously for a long time now. This period could have given some time to rest as the PSL is also set to commence from February 14 and Sarfaraz will be leading the Quetta Gladiators is concerned. As far as the World Cup is concerned, Pakistan will begin their campaign against Windies on May 31 in Nottingham.
