Former South Africa captain Shaun Pollock had voiced his opinion about South Africa’s chances in this year’s World Cup earlier. Pollock believes that the Proteas can win the tournament if they work out the right approach to play in English conditions. He has now has selected South Africa’s World Cup squad and has surprisingly left out Anrich Nortje, the promising pacer who is doing well in the ongoing series against Sri Lanka.
The South Africa Cricket team has had its share of tragic retreats at the World Cup but the former Proteas captain believes Faf du Plessis can lead the team to the rare World Cup glory.
“There are some strong teams around. We thought we had the formula before, but it didn’t work out. There’s no reason why this team can’t come up with the right strategy and perform at the right time and bring home the silverware,” Pollock said while covering the fourth ODI between South Africa and Sri Lanka for Super Sport.
South Africa are currently playing Sri Lanka in a five-match ODI series at home which they’ve won 3-0 already. Following that, South Africa made a few changes to the squad by bringing back the likes of Hashim Amla and JP Duminy who were away for a while. However, due to a personal reason, Amla had to drop out of the final two ODIs and gave Reeza Hendricks a chance to play. But Pollock hasn’t included Hendricks in his squad for the world cup.
Markram and Steyn make it
The former captain of South Africa Shaun Pollock recently admitted that the team’s exit from the 1999 World Cup was the most heartbreaking one till now as they were the best team at the event. The Proteas played out a tie against Australia in the semi-final but the Aussies went through as they beat South Africa in the Super Six stage.
The ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 starts on May 30 wherein South Africa will begin their campaign taking on hosts England in the opening game.
Here’s Shaun Pollock’s World Cup squad: Faf du Plessis(c), Quinton de Kock, Imran Tahir, Aiden Markram, JP Duminy, Hashim Amla, David Miller, Lungi Ngidi, Andile Phehlukwayo, Dwaine Pretorius, Kagiso Rabada, Tabraiz Shamsi, Dale Steyn, Rassie van der Dussen, Chris Morris.
