ICC World Cup 2019: The oldest and youngest squads of the mega event
Mujeeb and Tahir are the youngest and oldest player respectively.
As the 2019 World Cup in England and Wales is coming closer, the excitement is also seeing an upward trend. A few days ago, the provisional squads were announced by all the participating nations and can make respective changes to the squads until May 23, a week before the opening match takes place. The format of the 50-overs extravaganza reverts back to the one in 1992.
The tournament is a one and a half month affair and one can’t afford to drop in intensity and hence the average of the squad is of prime importance. Though age brings in experience, it may have a negative implication when it’s about showing agility on the cricket pitch. Sri Lanka have the oldest squad heading into the tournament with the average of the players being 29.9.
Leave alone playing decently, the team has strained to zero in on even a proper captain. South Africa and England are second with the average age being 29.5. The Brits are considered as one of the favourites for the World Cup bearing in mind their all-around ability. The Proteas have the oldest player of the tournament in leg-spinner Imran Tahir at the age of 40.
Pakistan- The youngest team
Australia aren’t far behind with the average age being 29.4. The Aussies are the five-time World Champions. Pakistan have the youngest squad with an average age at 27.3. While Shoaib Malik is their oldest player, the team has a couple of 19-year-old quicks in Shaheen Shah Afridi and Mohammad Hasnain. The Men in Green are followed by the Afghanistan team who has an average age of 27.4.
The Afghans have been gifted with some prodigious talents, especially in the spin department. The likes of Rashid Khan and Mujeeb Ur Rahman are expected to wield magic in the World Cup. In fact, at the age of 18, Mujeeb is the youngest player in the World Cup. Rashid is only 20 years and has already garnered a number of laurels in his short, yet illustrious international career.
