ICC World Cup 2019: WAGs to accompany Indian players after the first game
The Indian squad for the World Cup will be picked in April.
The issue of allowing spouses of the players of the Indian cricket team comes up on the discussion table time and again. Captain Virat Kohli is in favour of Wives and Girlfriends (WAGs) accompanying the players on foreign tours. Of late, the WAGs are allowed to accompany the cricketers on overseas tours with a few recommendations. The pattern will continue to be followed during the upcoming World Cup in England as well.
As per reports, the WAGS can meet their cricketing partners after the initial 10 days of the tournament. India will be the last team to launch their campaign in the upcoming tournament on June 5 when they meet South Africa in Southampton. The side is set to reach England on May 22 and the WAGs could be with their husbands/partners after the first game. India’s second match in the WC is against Australia at the Oval on June 9. The tournament is starting on May 30.
The WAGs though will be returning home if India qualify for the semi-final phase. Since the pressure will be high in the knock-out stage, the officials don’t want the cricketers’ families staying with them then as reported by Indian Express.
Special chef to accompany Indian team to World Cup
Besides the WAG issue, it was also decided that the team will be carrying a special chef with it. A few members of the Indian team had trouble when they went to England for a full-fledged tour last year and hence the team doesn’t want to take a chance this time.
This is not the first time, however, that the Indian team is taking a chef with it to a foreign tour. In 2016, it took a chef during a visit to the Caribbeans for a series. The players will also be on a special diet during the World Cup designed by conditioning coach Shankar Basu.
The Indian squad for the World Cup will be picked in April and the players who are in the race for a berth are busy showcasing their skills in the ongoing Indian Premier League at the moment.
