I’d like to spend a day in Dhoni’s shoes: David Willey
Willey made his IPL debut with the Chennai Super Kings in the 2018 season.
Two English boys – their reliable pacers in the limited-overs format David Willey and Mark Wood were a part of the Chennai Super Kings team in the Indian Premier League (IPL). This was their maiden season in the tournament and they played under the charismatic Indian skipper MS Dhoni was back leading the Men in Yellow.
CSK won the tournament beating Sunrisers Hyderabad in the final and without a doubt played the best cricket among the 8 teams. Though Wood and Willey played just 1 and 3 matches respectively they enjoyed the time with the franchise. Both the players helped Chennai gel the unit and were involved in off-field activities. Wood, as it turns out, is a wonderful singer and he wrote a few songs for the team as well as the players that they would sing in the team bus on the way to the ground and back.
The duo appeared on Harbhajan Singh’s show with his CSK teammates and Bhajji asked them “If you could wake up as anyone who would that be”
Mark Wood said – ‘Lennox Lewis’ – The big guy is a former professional boxer who played the sport from 1989 to 2003. Lennox is a three-time world heavyweight champion. Wood would fancy having those muscles and being a world champion.
David Willey said – “I’d like to spend a day in Dhoni’s shoes.”
Willey was quite impressed with Dhoni’s leadership as well as his own calmness and after his stint in the IPL had said, “I learnt just as much from watching guys like him as I did from the few games I played in,” he told Cricbuzz. “How calm he is and how he thinks about the game when he is batting was great to learn from. Things like that are invaluable when you are learning about the game,” he added.
