Glenn Maxwell, the prolific all-rounder from Australia is rated as one of the best and clean hitting batsmen across the globe. He likes to dominate bowlers from the start and the Aussie all-rounder is very capable of doing the same. The 31-year-old is too often compared with some of the all-time best hitters in cricket. And, now Dale Steyn, who is currently playing for Melbourne Stars under Maxwell’s leadership, has heaped praises for the Aussie international.
Maxwell has played for several teams in different T20 leagues across the globe and he is certainly one of the most demanded players. Recently, in the IPL 2020 auction, Kings XI Punjab splashed a whopping amount of 10.75 Crore to grab his services for the upcoming season. However, spending such a hefty amount was worth for a player, who has a career strike rate of 160 in T20I cricket and boasts of three tons and seven half-centuries.
Dale Steyn opines on Glenn Maxwell as a hitter
Dale Steyn, the Proteas pacer, said that when it comes to the shorter format then there are very few players, who can hit the ball as cleanly as Maxwell. He also added the fact that everybody talks about AB de Villiers, who is also nicknamed as Mr. 360° but Maxwell is also not very far. Steyn believes that if there was no player like de Villiers then everybody would have given the same nickname to the Aussie all-rounder because he has the ability to hit the ball in all the areas of the ground where bowlers don’t want batsmen to hit.
“When it comes to T20, you very rarely get guys that strike it as cleanly as he does. He’s very smart, too, the way he goes about it. You talk about guys like AB de Villiers being a 360 (degree) player but ‘Maxi’ is up there, too. It’s just a nickname that AB’s earned because he plays like that, but had AB not been around you could’ve easily nicknamed someone like Maxi ‘Mr 360’ because he’s got that capability of taking you down in areas you don’t want the ball to go,” Dale Steyn said as quoted by cricket.com.au.
He also recited the fact that Maxwell has got strong wrists and there are not many players, who can hit a bowler for a six over the point region. Only Virender Sehwag, the former Indian batsman, was the player, who was similar to Maxwell when it comes to playing some outrageous strokes. The Aussie all-rounder is a difficult player to bowl because the bowlers find it difficult to read his mind while bowling.
“He’s got strong wrists. There are not many players that can hit you for six over point; Sehwag was someone that could open the blade like that. (Maxwell is) very clever because the next ball he could flick you over the deep square, so as a bowler you’re always guessing what he’s up to,” Steyn added.
